  • GC2 Wont Power On

    Hi

So I hurt my back maybe 2-3 months ago so didn't play any golf.

During that time my GC2 was in its usual place in the garage but was never powered up. I did charge it once or twice, but other than that it was never touched.

We did have 3-4 nights during that period where it was very cold. I don't know if that can cause any issues.

Yesterday my back was feeling a little better so I went to power it up but nothing would happen. Its connected to the mains and the green light on the power-supply is lighting up.

I opened up the GC2 and disconnected the battery but it still wont turn on. Nothing at all happens.

    Anyone have any ideas ?

I was contemplating sending it in to local phone/games console/computer/gadget repair place. (Im not in the US)

First I would try another power supply and leave the battery in. Second I would check the ribbon cable that connects the power button to the main CPU board. They can become loose which would cause the GC2 to not turn on. It's an easy fix, just follow this video tutorial. Ribbon Cable Replacement on Vimeo

You don't need to replace the ribbon cable, just make sure the connection is secure on both ends.

Thanks for the quick reply. I will definitely look into the ribbon cable.

I am trying to find another suitable power supply alright but I'm not sure thats the issue. Hopefully I'm wrong though because that would be an easy fix !

If the green light is on, doesn't that mean it has powered on and is now a display issue? Could the brightness be an issue? I think I had to do this on mine once.

If you GC2 display appears too dim you may need to adjust the brightness.

      1. Please take the GC2 device and hold down the Power button for 6 seconds to perform a hard restart.

      2. From there, hold down the Brightness and Contrast button (little button in the bottom RH corner of the device that looks like sunshine) and press the Power button once. Continue to hold the Brightness button until you see a solid green light on the GC2 device then let go of the button.

      3. Use the Up and Down arrow buttons on the GC2 device multiple times to see if that will adjust the brightness and contrast of the LCD backlight screen to get the LCD screen to come back on.

      If that does not resolve:

      1. Power off then power on the GC2 device, then unplug the GC2 from all cables and remove any protective covering.

      2. Find the two holes in the bottom of the GC2 device and push up into those holes with your fingers. This should lift the LCD screen up and you can move it up and down to +/- 30 degrees.

      3. Note, when moving this screen up and down, do you get any change in what shows up on the screen? if the display appears to be changing when you perform this movement it indicates that the display itself is damaged or the cable connecting the display to the CPU of the device may be damaged, causing the issue.

The GC2 device may be returned for repair diagnosis to resolve the display issue. Otherwise the GC2 will still continue to read shots independently of this LCD issue and you can continue using.

Most likely the battery has discharged below about 2 volts or so. When this happens the charger will not recharge the battery. The small chargers are switching regulators and need to see some battery voltage to start. This is done so the charger doesn't try to charge a short to ground. If you you can find someone who has a current limited linear charger you can charge the battery high enough to allow the switching regulator to begin working.

Thanks for all the tips guys.

In the end, a hard reset did the trick. With the mains plugged in, hold down the power button for 5 seconds. I never knew you could do that.

Such a relief that that did the trick !
