Dear Firesight: FSX Play Bunker Penalty

You had bunker penalty right at 70% green side and 90% fairway. Please change these back. The game is much better when lie penalty is on but you went a little crazy with this last update. I think heavy rough is also a bit extreme but not as out of proportion with real golf like current bunker setting.

ForesightMattyGForesightSports Agreed, the penalty percentage is a little nuts…

Concur. This is a weird step backwards IMO.

I don't hate the greenside bunkers being 50%, but something has to be done with the fairway bunkers. I was in a shallow fairway bunker, used my 5 wood to get out. My GC3 recorded my hit to be a 210 yard carry, but FSX play gave me less than 60 yards. Landing in fairway bunkers now is nearly as bad as just taking a drop.

Are you sure it didn't hit the lip? That seems awfully harsh.

No this is real, it goes literally nowhere, very unrealistic. Needs fixed STAT

Agreed. Gave this a try, it's way too much.

Fairway bunkers should certainly be in the 90% range. Two things happen in fairway bunkers IRL for the most part. One, you try to pick it clean and you are within a club of your normal yardage (90% penalty is about right). Two, you have a crappy lie, huge lip, whatever, and are just trying to advance the ball or chip out sideways. Unless the sim is going to do a better job than just saying "sand" for your lie, why would you balance around the second one. It just causes frustration on the part of the player, and is far more penalizing than a fairway bunker IRL.

Green side bunkers are of course a little different. Yes you might take a "full" swing to hit it 10 yards IRL, so I understand why someone thought like 50% is a good idea, but it just doesn't translate in the Sim. Most of us are hitting off mats with perfectly tight lies where you just cant replicate a sand shot. The closest thing is to hit a perfect flop shot, but if you try that with a 50% penalty, you will still be in the bunker. The old way was make sure you hit a high enough "chip" shot to clear the lip with a little extra to compensate for the sand. While perhaps not a perfect sand replica, it was predictable and penalizing enough. What ends up happening now is that people need to just blast a 60degree wedge and pray. There is no art/skill to it, and certainly doesn't do any better than the old way to replicate a sand shot. Also, not a problem in my sim, but I have played in several where blasting a 60 degree might put a hole in the ceiling.

TLDR: Either revert the change, or if you can pull it off, add sliders in the menu so you can set the percent penalty of your choosing for various types of bunkers.

The point should be to make it as realistic as possible, in which case there should be some variance built into the penalty % for all non-fairway lies. I am pretty sure that is so in FSX 2020.

For fairway bunkers, a flat 10% carry reduction is not a severe enough penalty. IRL, hitting a fairway bunker is worse than just adding an extra club into the green. Contact is variable and you don't have a great idea how far it's going to go. Something like 5-20% carry reduction would be more realistic. 50% is clearly too much.

For greenside bunkers, something like 40-50% off would be fine. You very rarely need to carry the ball more than 50 yards in that case, which works with any wedge you want to use.

I don't understand why Foresight seems to think the penalty algorithm is secret. Why not just tell people what it does?

I get the argument, but I think it falls apart in practice. When I am in a fairway bunker IRL, I can visually assess the lie. Is it something I can pick clean (maybe a 90% lie) or am I going to have to dig it out (maybe a 50% lie). The sim just says "sand". A flat percentage in practice seems to be a better solution IMO unless the lie description is going to give you a lot more info, and we just arent there yet with the software.

Same with being in the rough. Sure you can't always predict if you will get a flier, but visually there are indicators, am I with or against the grain, how deep is the particular rough in question, how far down am I sitting in it, etc. None of that really translate in the sim, so again, a flat penalty is better.

Don't get me wrong, I can get behind a little variation and randomness (maybe 88-92% penalty), but it cant be bouncing around between 50-90 when the only thing you have to go off of is "sand" or "rough".

My players/guests are all asking for lie penalty to be turned off, but that also turns off rough lie penalties also. Makes for a boring game when all lies (rough, sand & fairway) are equal

Try going in any bunker fairway or green side and you need 3.7 times your needed distance to get the distance you are trying for. I have yet to get 50% off. If you look at the actual hit on GCQuad, GC3 You cannot get 50% of that distance on program…(more like 70% off) used to be (70% of, or 30% penalty)…. High hits or low hits does not matter.

Someone else please try this and check your monitor vs program. & my math. Can anyone hit a shot and get 50% “of” the launch monitor number?? A longer attempt (60 to 80 yards needed) is a better example, you’ll need a big hit from a fairway wood to go 60 yards.

Maybe they have it going less distance if you hit the club deep in sand so some better golfers may be able to pick it cleaner but I don’t think the monitors give that info to program??

it says “50 percent” but it plays more like 25 percent.
