  • FSX Play @ 4K

Just wondering if anyone is running FSX Play at a 4K resolution, and what sort of GFX card you've got.

I've installed a new BENQ TK710STI 4K projector, and am in need of a new GFX card for my PC to help it cope.
Ideally I'd like to be able to run it at max settings.

I'm led to believe nVidia will be releasing their 5000 series cards next month, so it may be wise to wait either for a good deal on a 4000 series card, or a new 5000 series if they're a huge improvement.

    TIA 👍

I run 4k but on HIGH graphics in FSX Play as Ultra won't run smooth (juddering). My machine is quite beefy but still cant handle Play on Ultra 4k.

    I am running a Lenovo Legion Desktop with Processor:13th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-13700KF Processor (E-cores up to 4.20 GHz P-cores up to 5.30 GHz) Graphic Card:NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 4080 16GB GDDR6X Memory:32 GB DDR5-5600MHz (UDIMM) - (2 x 16 GB) Storage:1 TB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 Performance TLC.

That's a very high spec computer, so it's a bit worrying that you can't run it on the top setting.
My old 1070 runs it at high at 1080p with no judder. I did try putting it onto 4K and Ultra yesterday just to see what it looked like - but didn't hit a ball. The sea at Pebble Beach looked pretty choppy though!
I guess a 4090 or 5080 / 5090 are going to be required for Ultra?

What dlss setting are you running? Are you using frame cap, or unlimited?

I'm using a 4070 12gb, and I set unlimited frame cap since setting to 60 was giving me only 30fps (maybe its a v sync issue), and initial testing was promising. I am using high settings with high dlss.

Honestly, the difference between high and ultra may not even be distinguishable.

I think waiting for 5000 series is a good idea, and then getting a used 4070 ti super 16gb version or higher for 600 to 650 would be a good deal. I'm running 2880x2160 (4x3 4kish), on a 12gb 4070, and so far it's been ok. I'm running high setting with high dlss. I'll test some more intense courses.

Edit I tried glorietta and pebble, and I was getting only 20 to 25fps on high and high dlss with a 4070. 4070 ti super is supposedly 40% better, but who knows in real life.

Similar to the above, I'm running a BenQ LK945ST, with a pretty decent PC and GPU (RTX 4070 Super 12g Ventus)..

I tried it on Ultra, but it crashed a few times, so knocked it down one level.

it looks amazing and honestly I'm not sure I could tell the difference anyway.

              I have an RTX 4080 and a 4K projector -> Optoma UHD35STX.
I run FSX Play on High and DLSS at Ultra, and really don't notice anything from 1080 to 4K, though I run at 4K because I can.
I come from a high-end home-theater background. A golf screen really diffuses the image compared to a HT screen, so you have that working against 4K too.

I've tried every resolution under the sun. Doesn't really matter, what matters most is that the gameplay is smooth. Multiple people have said the upgrade to 4k projector is not worth it unless you are also using for movies etc.

I did a test with scaling software and 4K with awesome results, but it would be nice to get some feedback from others to see if there is a consistent gain by going this route...

I run a boosted 3080Ti and it jitters on ultra. This is not a graphics card problem. This is a program problem. Don’t waste your money buying a new graphics card even the most high-end video games outside of FSX play can run on High graphic settings on my machine no problem .

I’ve already got a 5090 on order… so will see if that does it. If not, I’ll certainly be writing to them and letting them know that the fastest GPU on the planet can’t cope!

You will clearly have no issue with the 5090. I run the 4090 at 4k highest settings and it’s a breeze. I received some abuse on pc forums for going “overkill” with a 4090 for a golf simulator, but it’s a no-brainer considering FSX is poorly optimized and the 4090 is a smaller fraction of overall sim cost.

For whatever reason I only get choppy generate at certain times on some PinSeeker holes.

FSX Play is a VRAM hog - no getting around it. It will use pretty much all you have available. I don't run 4K but I do run WUXGA on my projector, and two additional 1080P monitors along with FSX Play and Swing Catalyst Capture software (two cameras) all off of the GPU (RTX4080) at Ultra settings with no stutter. There are a lot of 'tweaks' you can use to optimize the results you get and many are listed on this site if you do a bit of digging. Don't forget to start with Foresight sports recommendations for graphics card optimization as well. The Frame Cap recommendation (use unlimited) shouldn't work, but does have a massive effect for whatever reason.

I use an Nvidia RTX 4090 for FSX Play all on Ultra and haven't had any issues, scenery looks crisp and ball motion is smooth. Also worth noting that while FSX Play has been a step forward, GS Pro is still the gold standard as far as Graphics are concerned. Nonetheless I still need to make an effort to play more courses on FSX Play as I've played half a dozen courses so far.
