Sidespin Observations

I'm about 1 month in with my GC2 and have noticed some odd things. My sidespin is most severe with my 50*, 54*, and 58* and is always a right to left hook (around 2000 rpm L). Every other club in my bag is pretty straight. My hybrids and 3 wood usually draw a bit but nowhere near as severe as the wedges. Driver is a push or pull but never much sidespin.

Anyone else noticed anything odd like this? I haven't gotten to test it outside yet but always thought the longer clubs would have more sidespin since you hit up on them more (I know sidespin isn't technically a thing).

What's the mat? It would be worth checking the lie angle. I also get more side spin with my short irons but outside I dont. That includes bringing my GC2 to the range. I think it's alignment being inside. I get 500-800 though.

2000 side spin seems like a lot! I agree check your mat, alignment, etc. Have you taken it to the range to test?

What if you set it up off your left foot and turn it to lefty and then hit?

I have noticed that my 53 and 58 degree wedges seem to have a lot of draw spin on them as well. Even on pitch shots where I feel like I am cutting across the ball, I can barely get the sidespin down to zero. In another post, somebody suggested that the lie angle might be too flat, causing the toe to be up in the air at impact. I'm curious if you find something about this. I like to display the spin axis rather than sidespin number though because I feel like it is easier to compare different clubs. Your wedges have close to 10000 rpm, while a driver might have 1/4 of that. So 2000 rpm of sidespin with a wedge won't cause as much hook as 2000 rpm of sidespin with a driver because the axis will be tilted much less (20% of the total spin is sidespin instead of 80%). I have read that for every 5 degrees of tilt, the ball will curve 3.5 yards per 100 yards of carry.

Actually, if the heel is digging in first, it's a flat lie. The toe would dig in first if it was too upright.

What do you mean turn it to lefty? Is there an actual setting you are supposed to change if playing it right handed vs. left handed?

It's coming to the point where I hate having full wedges into greens.

Years ago I had a ping sand wedge. It was great out of the sand but I hit so many shots right. One day I took it to a local guy. He had me hit off a board with tape on the bottom. It turned out the lie was really flat. Instantly, it was great. The lie angle being off means either the toe or heal hit first instead of all at once. If you have a firm CCE mat and your club is too upright, then your heal will hit first forcing the clubface closed through impact adding extra side spin. It's easy to check. Put masking tape on the bottom and put down a large piece of plywood or something to stand on and hit off. You'll see the impact position on the tape.

As far as alignment, you may notice people are aimed right or left of target. When you're in a a square room you're usually square because of all the square lines inside. If you're usually aimed right and closing the club to correct, that'll end up adding left spin indoors.

Not a setting, but it will sense that the ball is in the zone for where a lefty would hit from. Just a trouble shooting step.

Has anyone gone outside and tested to see if they are actually hitting big hooks with their sand wedge? I'm hoping to do this on Saturday. I just can't imagine a world in which you hook your shorter clubs and not your longer clubs. I'm 6'0" and have always played standard lie clubs with no issues. I also adjust my proximity to the ball based upon how long of a club I'm holding in my hand. 5 handicap FWIW. I would hate to have to start aiming to the right on the sim with my wedges just to correct this. Seems like it would creep into my IRL game and mess things up.
