  • Foam/Practice Balls on the GC2

    Hello all-

I love the GC2, but my primary use is in my golf studio that I'm setting up in my home office. I don't have a ton of room, so hitting real golf balls is going to be an issue. I would love to pick up the GC2 in order to play TGC, but I haven't seen anyone testing it RECENTLY with foam/practice/almost golf balls. It seems like Skytrak would work, but I think I would get annoyed by the delay. Has anyone ever tested the GC2 with foam balls? Is there a way to adjust for the difference to get close to normalized distances on TGC?

I want the GC2 for it's accuracy on the range...I just want something close to real while playing TGC. Thanks.

I'm out of town right now but I'll test when I get home. I have some almost golf balls that the kids use.

I've tested it. I find almost balls are about 10% shorter than real balls. The interface for TGC/GC2 allows for you to add back that 10%. The bigger draw back is they suck to hit. There is no feel like there is with a ball.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again... Get Qolf balls. Very similar numbers to real balls (using Skytrak). Only slightly longer. But the spin seems very close. The best part is the feel. Way more feedback off your club face than foam balls.

Thanks m3w. Just ordered some of those to try out.

so I ordered the qolf balls you recommended, and tested it with the gc2 and it seems way off on the launch angle. I just tested little bump and runs with a 7 iron and I was getting 17 degrees of launch everytime. You didn't experience this on the skytrak?

I was wondering if anyone else has done any further testing with the CG2 and qolf balls. I have had very good luck with them and the skytrak. Spin is a little less and distance a little long but definitely playable. Since I believe that both the Skytrack and CG2 read the dimples, I expect similar results. In Skytrak I see very close launch angle and ball speed numbers since these are based on serial timed pictures of the ball. I think the spin is less because the ball is harder and doesn't grip the club as well and I suspect the lower spin number is the primary reason for the longer distance (and decreased spin axis). It seems to me if these programs offered a boost function for the spin numbers you could make the qolf ball almost identical to a Titleist. I am considering upgrading to a CG2 and would like to have the option to use the qolf ball in sim games.
