  • Fsx vs FR1

    Hi
New to the forum and wondered if I could get some advice.
Just got GC2 with HMT and have the opportunity of purchasing used FR1 software and PC with about 5 course for a reasonable price or get a new PC that can cope with FSX and then purchase FSX at twice the price of the FR1. I have seen both in action but would like some opinions of those who have either one or upgraded. Is FSX really worth the extra.
    Thanks

I have had FR1 with 9 courses for about 2 years. Last winter I tried out the demo of FSX for the trial period. The only significant advantage of FSX for me was the better resolution graphics. Everything else was harder to do especially with respect to the amount of mouse clicks required to perform simple functions. My feedback to Foresight was in essence I wouldn't trade FR1 for FSX for free.

Since I only use the system in the colder months to practice, better resolution, online play etc is of little or no value to me. Actually the ability to run stand alone without any connection to the internet I consider an advantage. With FSX I had to log on every time I used it. Once or twice during the trial the local ISP was down so I couldn't get going and had to go back to FR1.

Possibly Foresight has fixed the many bugs that were present in my trial version. The version I had last spring was not ready for prime time compared to FR1.

Do you need to be online to play FSX? If so is this also for the range and practice?
At the moment you can get fsx with one course or FR1 with 10 courses for about the same price.
I don't know how much i will play sim but i like to practice alot.
What would be the best choice?

I have had both for about a year and just recently purchased a HMT. I use FS1 99% of the time. I have a 10 course package with fs1 and 3 courses with FSX(oakmont, Hazeltine, and Teton Pines). Maybe I don't have my FSX set up ideally but I just don't think it works well as far as displaying my HMT data. There are three different screens that come up after each shot but I'm not fond of the layout presentation. I usually play FS1 in practice mode either on the range or on a course and I just really like the simplicity of it. In practice mode on FS1 there is always a data box in the upper left hand corner that shows me all my numbers all the time. I also get how close to the pin I am on every shot which I am not getting in IMPROVE mode on Fsx(which is a huge issue). For example the past few weeks my son and I will play FS1 in practice mode and play our version of closest to the pin on Hazeltine #17 (which was #8 at Ryder cup). I'd hit 5 shots then he would etc - we could do this for hours - without ever having to click a mouse or walk over to computer! I have not been able to figure out how to do this on FSX. I am only getting distance and how far offline. As far as graphics go I'm not even sure that FSX is an upgrade - I know everyone says it is but in my mind it is not at Hazeltine (have this course on both). I also have TGC which graphically is better than either the foresight offerings but I don't use because it has been too buggy and inconsistent in my hands. We really only use FSX when we have four players and want to do a two man scramble. FS1 does not have auto putt in scramble mode and nobody here is interested in putting on a sim. Hope this helps - I'm sure some of my complaints are operator error and would love any feedback.

Thanks very much for the informative replies. Unfortunately the fr1 software is off the table so I will have to go with FSX.

What do you mean off the table? Can you not buy it anymore?

I'm about to go for an HMT and am currently deciding on software. Currently only using the iPad app. Wonder if any of these issues with FSX have improved with updates over the last year since the above was posted in May 2016?

Anyone here who have upgraded to FSX looking to sell their FR1?

                  What's the difference between FR1 AND FS1?

Not sure if there is an FS1?? Just FR1 and FSX that I know of. I currently have FR1 with 5 courses that I bought from a member here for $650 (came with Dongle and Original Case/CD). I like the practice setup on FR1, maybe because I am just so custom to it, as many golf outlets use this for fitting and/or hitting. I do plan on buying TGC for playing later on, as they have a huge database of courses to play and the graphics are top notch. I checked out FSX and for the price tag, it is not worth it IMO. So if you can get your hands on a FR1 for relatively good deal and buy TGC, I think you would be way ahead of FSX in pricing and flexibility.

Knowing Foresight they may change this deal, but they discount FSX by $1,000 for FR1 owners. I thought they would require the FR1 dongle back but didn't so now I have both and really like them for different reasons. FR1 can be played without internet which is nice. FSX keeps track of your practices online so you can view historical club data and track improvements. Being able to create skills challenges is awesome especially with competitive friends. Been going through a TGC phase lately too. They're all really good. TGC best graphics. FR1/FSX extremely accurate data and true ball flight.
