  • Homemade GC2 Protective Case

I wanted to share my case design and see if anyone had input to help with it. I designed the pieces in AutoCAD and had them laser cut at ponoko.com. The cost was about $80 for all of them. A few of the features that I designed into it are that it raises it to sit level with my hitting mat and it has hooks on the front to put an alignment rod into for easier setup. It still has a few issues though. The sides are MDF designed to look like wood. I thought if I pre-drilled the holes it would be fine, but it isn't as strong as I would like. It will still stop rebound balls off my screen and I feel much better having it in any sort of case though. The bigger problem is that it doesn't detect the ball properly when it is hit. It sees the ball when you are placing it in the hitting area because the light turns from red to green, but when you hit it all of the data parameters are blank. I think the camera hole on the bottom is a few millimeters too low. The camera isn't obstructed but I don't know how wide angle the lens is. Does anyone know of a way to visualize what the camera sees (maybe a piece of Foresight software?) or have any idea what the viewing angle of the cameras are? I made the holes as big as I could while still keeping a ball from going through them, but it might be that the cover is so thick that the camera sees the far edge of it.

Ya it looks like its picking up the edges of those holes. How close do you have it to the glass? Any room to get it closer if you extend the front a bit?

You didn't provide any dimensions but mine looks very similar and works perfectly so it can be done.

The only obvious difference is the height and slope of your horizontal piece and sides. Mine sits right on top of the lower GC2 section and follows the slope. Yours looks to be much higher which might be affecting the camera.

If you think it is the holes in the vertical section then remove the vertical glass and see if it works.

To check the sides/horizontal section take it out of the case and jury-rig the vertical section in place and see if it works.

Also my sides are 2x4 instead of that thin MDF you have. Designed to protect direct impact from both club and ball. Maybe ghetto but effective.

The acrylic sheet is 9mm thick and the GC2 can sit right against it. The holes are 1.4" diameter. I couldn't find any pictures of your case. Could you tell me how thick your piece of acrylic/plexiglass is and how big the holes are?

Mine is 6mm thick lexan. Holes 32mm.

9mm seems thick. What happens when you remove the vertical piece?

It works fine with the vertical piece removed. The place I got the pieces cut didn't have lexan as an option. Since acrylic isn't as impact resistant, I went with the thickest one that they had. My hole cutouts are 11% bigger, which won't account for all of the extra 50% thickness. They also have a 5.6mm thick option. I guess I just need to decide if I want to go with the thinner one and have a very good chance of it working, or stick with the thicker one and maybe it will work, maybe it won't.
