  • R-Motion with Kids

I've been playing/using my R-Motion for about 3 months and love it. I finally got my kids interested this past weekend in hitting a few shots with their Jr clubs, only because a friend of mine brought his son over, so some peer pressure got them involved. Everyone had a great time, although having to switch clips around to a bunch of different clubs and get them setup properly in the game took a while. I thought it was weird that you have to add a player in TGC, rename them, have them hit a shot, then go back to the Rapsodo software, find the name, switch to "Kid", then change the measurements and go back to the game. I would think you should be able to just setup names and clubs in Rapsodo before ever launching TGC. It made me keep wondering whether the data had even saved. It's also strange that when you launch TGC a separate time, those saved names are not available to choose from when adding a player - You have to rename again, and then again cross your fingers that it's grabbing the right club data from the names that were previously used.

    Anyhow, my questions are:

Does anyone have any general advice for having kids play with jr. clubs?
Is there a way to tee-off from different tees? We did the driving range for a while, but then wanted to play a course, and of course, they have to hit the ball about 6 times to get up where the adult drives are. It would be nice to start them off somewhere else.
What advice do you have for securing the clips better to the small Jr. shafts?

Any other R-Motion with Kids experience would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

My daughter plays all the time (she is 9).

    1. I am not sure why you would have to go hit a shot first and then set your kids profile up. I did not do this. The whole renaming a guest every time is a TGC thing, not an R Motion thing. R Motion made it so you could create a profile for other golfers in the R Motion app and that would sync up when it recognizes the name in TGC. As long as the guest name in TGC is the same as the profile name created in R Motion app, it should grab that club data.

    2. There is no way to select different tee boxes with TGC 1. I do believe in TGC 2019 you will be able to do this.

    3. Which leads to this, I highly recommend purchasing the full version of the software if you are serious about wanting your kids to play. There are no kids courses included with the R Motion/TGC basic package. Rapsodo will tell you that they included some par 3's but that is a joke since the very first hole on the par 3 course is 160 over water. They didn't develop the R Motion will JR golfers in mind but have taken steps to rectify this (they added all the user profile options, shaft adjustments, etc, after initial release).

With the full TGC license, there are many JR courses that are suitable for all ages. And you can even make your own.

Also, if you purchase the full license you will receive the upgrade to TGC 2019 for free (best you personally check with Pro Tee United about this and not just take my word for it).

    4. I use black tape right below the grip to help secure the clips in place. It works perfectly.

What you (and your kid) will have to get used to is the visual trajectory of the ball. It may sometimes look like it is only 5 feet off the ground but the distance should be correct. I can't say enough good things about R Motion and Rapsodo. I hope they keep up their great customer support as their product grows.

Also, I am not sure if you bought the additional clip set (or two) but it is well worth it.

Everything HeMan says is true and good stuff. I have a 7 year old that is getting into playing I'm excited! lol. I setup one of the clips on his clubs. Remember in TGC you can choose a Driver but be swinging a JR 6 iron. So the kids can BOMB it away so to speak. It's not practice, but it's fun!

For now I only have the 4 pack of clips...I have them on my Putter, Wedge, 8 Iron and Driver. If I need to hit a 200 yard shot I choose 4 iron in TGC but still swing the 8 Iron. I have the club profiles setup so that when I swing that 8 Iron the speeds are such that my 4 iron yardage is correctly played. It's a bit weird, but actually works great for just a fun round. I get to hit my shots I think/want to but don't swap clips around every time.

      Hope that helps. Enjoy!

        Thanks, guys. Great advice.

HeMan - Are you sure about being able to setup the new player profile directly in R-Motion before going to TGC? Maybe I need an updated version, but mine specifically says, in the R-Motion software dropdown of names, that to add a new player, go into TGC, rename a golfer with new name, hit a shot, and then come back to make measurement adjustments. I didn't know about Jr. courses in the full version, though. That's definitely something to consider, but I don't think I can justify the expense right now.

StormGolf73 - That's a good idea about letting them drive longer by selecting different club - hadn't thought of that. I'll have to play around with that. Are you still setting the the person to "Kid" in R-Motion with accurate Jr. club measurements, or just having them play as an adult? I do have 14 clips, but most of them are already on my own club set. So, I just pulled two out that I don't need right now (putter and 3 iron) and used those for our two Jr. clubs (3 Wood and 7 iron)

BTW, I guess I need to fix my notification settings, because I didn't know anyone had responded to this post until I happened to log back in and see stuff in my inbox here.

I just slipped the clip on his JR 7 iron and selected DRIVER in TGC. It's not accurate traj, distance or anything else...but he plays his own game...his current long drive is 190 something...he moved up from 170 the other day! He enjoys it and it shows him progress...but it's not accurate.

I did not know about the KIDS option...once he gets a little more engaged I'll look at setting up a profile for him with accurate distances etc.. Thanks for the info!

So it has been awhile since I set my R Motion profiles but when you state it like that it sounds familiar, sorry.

Even if you have their profile set to adult and select driver when using a 3W, the distance is still really measured by club head speed so it really won't matter. I am not sure if you can boost distance or swing speed in the TGC settings (not even sure if you can access this without the full license anyway). I don't believe TGC gives the ability to boost (maybe I am wrong).

If you play on R Motion quite a bit then the full license is well worth it. So many really good courses and RCR's are available and you can play on the online Tour. Also, the upgrade to TGC 2019 will be worth it as well. Good luck no matter what.
