  • Rmotion using foam balls

i just got my rmotion and am hitting foam balls. The readings are way off. 7 iron is only showing 60 yards. I did tell it I was using the almost golf balls.
what is the difference between foam balls and almost golf balls?
Any special changes needed to get the foam balls to read correct?

Almost Golf balls are much more dense than regular foam balls and do not compress the same. The R-Motion uses an accelerometer to detect impact. Regular foam balls are not dense enough to provide accurate feedback for the sensor to adequately impact. Depending on which foam balls you are using, you may be able to tweak the input distance to get better yardages. You may still struggle with accurate direction.

Wow, the 7 iron is only showing 60 yards? I got about 100 yards on mine with foam balls. You can increase the distance by adding length to the clubs. The max length on TGC is 40" so I set my driver at 40" and worked down from there with the other clubs. That got me to a decent distance on TGC with the foam balls, although direction was off until braycobb explained that I needed to change the setting from Real Ball to Almost Golf Ball. Distances on the Android app are substantially shorter than on TGC.

I'm using a foam ball that is a bit harder than cheap ones and has dimples, bought at DIck's Sporting Goods. My distances are pretty close after adjusting the lengths in the app. Def better to use the range on TGC. People have said the app is way off but I have no first hand knowledege since I cannot use the app on my Android phone. It never connects to the device. Maybe try Callaway HX practice balls if you can't use Real of Find Almost Golf Balls.

If the device is connecting to TGC but not to your Android, that suggests the bluetooth transmitter in the sensor is working and the problem is with your Android. Have you tried a different phone? On the Android, are you sure you have bluetooth switched on and paired? You're not missing much, TGC is far better than the Android app, but of course easier to take the app is easier to take to the course.

The harder the ball the better, since the device senses impact. I've noticed a difference even between a foam ball and a hard plastic wiffle ball. Also, what kind of net do you have? Mine is a cheap one and I quickly discovered it won't last long if I keep hitting it with real golf balls. If you have a durable net, I'd hit real balls. Based on advice in this forum, I recently ordered some Almost Golf balls on eBay, they are pricey and a bit hard to find, but people say they are the best.

Currently I am not even using a new, just hitting in the garage toward the garage door. Using the foam balls it is no big deal, but a net would help with the bounce back.

For what it is worth I started out just using plain foam balls and was having issues getting readings and distances were way short. Next I tried some Maxfli high impact balls from Dicks sporting goods and had better luck but we broke 4 of these in the 1st round.
Now I have wrapped the original foam balls with electrical tape and they work great. I get good readings and they are holding up great. I was even able to tape together the broken Maxfli balls and they have held together just fine.
