  • Tips for putting

Does anyone have any putting tips? I find that when I play the first few holes are a disaster trying to figure out the green speeds. And I have no idea how to read the breaks accurately

The only tip I can give you is if you are going to play a tour round, play a practice round on that course first. I take many "mulligans" in a practice round learning how the slope affects the ball, especially when putting!

I agree.... if you are new to TGC, use the autorewind feature during non tour rounds. The putting ball physics are fantastic on TGC. Just like IRL, you have to make sure you don't run it through the break. The whole 1 foot distance for every inch of slope is just a rough guideline. Your shot will react differently depending on where the slope is....early, late, gradual or a sharp slope like going down a tier. Practicing your putting and chipping on TGC will have you scoring better on TGC quite quickly.

1 inch up or down is equal to a foot. For example. 15 ft putt with 3 inch incline would mean putt an 18 footer. As far as break. I find if the dots are moving slower I move the cursor by hitting arrow on keyboard one click for each box in he direction of the dot. For faster moving ones I go 2 clicks. And so forth.

Thanks bubs! That seems to help out quite a bit. I would love to play a practice round but my wrist and back would kill me the next day

I apologize if this is a dumb question or has already been answered, but I couldn't find it if so. I'm new to TGC and using a GC2 if that matters. Once on the green, there is clearly a marker for the hole with a distance and the elevation change number, but there is always another marker to the right and behind with a completely different distance number. I cannot for the life of me figure out what this second distance marker is for or referencing. I find it extremely distracting and would like to eliminate it or at least understand what it is.

the flag is the hole, the other marker is your aim stick. use WASD to move it around.

Very enlightening, being the idiot I am, I never realized you could move the aim point forward or backward! THANKS!
How can I make a wood actually stop or slow down on the green without always rolling off the back? I realize a wood would roll further, but they almost always roll off the green. In the settings I usually set the speed to 4, stimp 4 and firmness 0.
Wedges are pretty good, sometimes I think irons roll to far also.

I know what the flag stick and aim stick are, but behind them there is a 3rd marker with a number/elevation. I think BWJones figured it out below.

That second number is the distance and elevation behind the hole. I assume it is marking the end of the green, but cannot say for sure without looking again. I use this occasionally to determine what the elevation is doing beyond the hole. For example, if the hole is "0" or flat from your ball, but the marker beyond the hole shows a -10 inches, it tells me I do not want to go past the hole. It might be nice to be able to turn this off since I have occasionally looked at that number as the distance to the hole by mistake.

THANK YOU! Yes, it must be marking the end of the green. I've found myself accidentally taking that as the distance to the hole when not paying close attn.

huh? there is no third marker. there is a distance to the cup, which never changes and there is a distance to the movable aim stick, which is always placed behind the hole by default.

move it forward with S and watch the number change.

Here is a crummy pic for reference. The hole is obviously 12ft and -4in elevation. What is the other box that says 15ft -5in? If I hit "W" or "S" nothing happens. If I hit "A" or "D" it changes the aiming point marker (12ft -4in) left or right like using the arrow keys, but none of the numbers change. Now that I'm looking at it, the 15ft -5in is clearly not the edge of the green either. Click image for larger version

The distance to the hole is marked with a flag next to it (the 12FT shown above). The other is the aiming stick. If you hit A or D it will move left and right. The numbers wouldn't change unless there is a notable break (distance would stay the same but the decline / incline could change with a big break to the side). If you hold W or S it will move forward and backward - making the distance change and also the incline assuming you aren't on a flat surface. As a side note, when you hit Q to zoom in to the location where the club is selected, you also use that WASD to move from there. Sometimes it's hard to see the break dots moving when you are too far away. hitting Q doesn't always show you what you want, so you hit WASD to move it around after hitting Q. Allows you to better see the break near the hole on those long putts.

The other numbers pertain to that yellow aiming stick.
