  • Skytrak putting in TGC with a mat

I recently had some wrist issues and purchased a fiberbuilt mat. I love it and the wrist is feeling good again. However, I notice that when putting, if I hit down on the ball slightly, it causes the ball to skip off the thicker turf and end up way short. An example is a 40 ft putting going 5 ft. Does anyone have any tips?

I haven't heard good experiences from putting with Fiberbuilt. Our tour's leading putter has a Fiberbuilt, but even with a GC2 he won't putt off it.

I don't know how or when TGC puts the SkyTrak into putting mode, but things like what you say - a 40 ft going 5 ft - happen to me if I don't manually putting mode when JNPG doesn't expect me to be putting.

I have a GC2 and putting on the fiberbuilt is fine with me. I think that the problem may come from the way that ST is only taking a couple of pictures whereas the GC2 takes 12 pictures on a putt. If the ball happens to bounce before the second picture is taken, then the average speed is going to appear way lower. The GC2 somehow handles if one or two frames are off from the ball bouncing. I'm not sure if it is throwing those frames away in its calculation or if there are just more data points so the average speed is still closer to the actual speed.

One thing to try is to use your phone to video a putt in slow motion (240 fps with iPhone) and make sure the ST is in the video too. When you hit the putt, try and see where the ball is when the second flash happens. Maybe the ball is rolling off the edge of the mat before the second picture is taken, in which case you could possibly move back a bit. If the ball looks like it is jumping up in the air a lot, I would try moving the ball forward in your stance an inch or two. I think the ball should be able to get up and roll on top of the fibers without too much of an issue if your stroke is moving slightly upward. Also, make sure you don't put the ball in one of the holes for a tee as that will definitely make it jump up.
