  • TGC Skytrak and R Motion

    Hi guys,
My best friend and I both have just had kids and we want to play simulator golf together. I just received my skytrak and I am trying to convince him to buy a R-Motion. My screen arrives tomorrow so I really am brand new to the community. Questions I have:
    1. Can be both play online? What will the cost to upgrade to the full TGC be for the R Motion? Is it the ~800 like I have to pay?
    2. He has played the TGC before on xbox and said that you cannot see the opponents shots or take turns; that it basically just turns into "you play your shots and I play mine and we compare scores at the end". Is this true?
    3. Can you pause games? Ideally we would want to play when we have some time but also understand we are going to be interrupted frequently.
    4. We aren't really concerned with "fairness" as anything that makes us feel like we are golfing is a win to us but any tips on leveling the playing field between the two devices?
    5. How do R Motion and Skytrak compare? I completely get that they are totally different technologies; I guess what I am wondering is there anythign that can make us more competitive/fair against eachother.

Anyway, excited to hear from you guys.
    Thanks,
    Cork.

    Welcome to the forum!

I consider myself a noob aswell even though i've been a member since last year. The forum is great, everything you need to know is covered and no question is a wrong one. I'm using the R-motion so i can cover that part and maybe even the TGC parts of your questions,

    1. TGC for R-motion is at the moment $500 one-time upgrade cost. That gives you the full TGC experience with the online tours and all. (you even get TGC2019 for free, when it's released)
    2. Turn-based is possible. You see your opponents shot and avatar. This takes a bit of time but is quite fun to play.
    3. Not sure what you mean. there is no time-limit in the game so you can take pause's whenever you want. If you play turn-based then your opponent(friend) needs to pause as well.
    4. I'm more than pleased with the r-motions accuracy. It will register topped or duffed shots as clean hits but if you strike the ball well thats not the biggest issue. In terms of distance and ball-trajectory I'm really suprised of its accuracy. I know my game pretty good sinsc I have the Game-golf Live IRL. so the distances and hooks and slices are almost the same.
    5. R-motion - measures club and calculates ball trajectory
Skytrak - doppler radar measures ball

For me the R-motion is a step-in model. I'm certain im going to buy a Skytrak when i have enough.
Search youtube for: live stream online play with tgc and skytrak
    and you'll get some more hands-on info/experice,

5-Skytrak measures ball so if it takes a good measurement it's quite accurate. R-motion measures club data and as such can easily mask bad shots. FYI, I've got both.

Here are some comments I posted about R-Motion:

https://golfsimulatorforum.com/forum...-motion-review . Bottom line: pretty accurate, excellent value.

About "pausing": if you mean saving and coming back later, then you will need the full license. Or, at least, I don't see how to do that in the limited license. In any case, if you're talking about remote multiplayer, you'd need the full license anyyay. (I've been holding off on the full license because I still hope to get a SkyTrak. If/when I do, I plan on posting some data for direct comparison.)

Fairness: This will depend on how good you are. If the vast majority of your shots are basically on, then no problem. If not, you'll have to adjust. The problem with mishits registering as great shots is a bigger deal than you might think if you're an average golfer. I have several of those per round. OTOH, I have plenty of shots that I know are misread against me because of not having the club perfectly square at address. Additionally, shortish chips are a complete shot in the dark. So I figure: R-motion giveth, and R-Motion taketh away. You'd either need to accept that, or he would need to "rewind" any shots that seemed way off. This is a mild pain because there is no hotkey for single mulligans (rewind). You could decide on a number per round, I guess.

A big upside to R-Motion, if your friend is on a budget, is that you can use Almost Golf balls, and there's a dedicated setting for it. So then you just need something to stop the ball like an old bedspread hung on something. I'm doing this, and it works fine. So you'd eliminate the costs of nets, impact screens, etc.
