  • Distance off by about 20% and other GC2/TGC issues

Hi Everyone! Finally got my build complete and I am having a few issues. I am using a GC2 with TGC on a TrueStrike Mat. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Here are my issues:
    1. Distance is off by roughly 20%. I don't know what's going on, but I've been playing golf for a long time, and my 150 yard club has always been a PW. At best on a pured strike I am getting roughly 135 --- but usually closer to 120. 3 wood distance is also about 15% or so off. Now, this is the distance on TGC, when looking down at the GC2 the carry distance is obviously a bit off as well.
    2. TrueStrike Mat with the GC2. I bought a piece of wood to set over the ball tray and allow for the GC2 to sit slightly above the mat. I can't find a way to use the pre-cut driver Tees. What have other people done to get around this? When I move the tee to the gel section (by setting it down the rubber tee) I then do not have enough room to stand with the two range sections connected behind me. I've just been hitting 3 wood off the deck, which is fine I suppose...

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I was planning on planning golf and watching basketball for essentially the next 72 hours. I guess worst case scenario I can just add an extra club or two.

    Thanks,

    Jared

So is this the first time you are swinging inside your setup? You CANNOT discount indoor swing. Just because you hit PW 150 outside, swinging it in your own home may produce different results. Obviously you can use the GC2 to confirm your ball speed outside and see if you are getting the same readings inside. Also, catching the mat slightly ahead of the ball will reduce the ball speed as well. A lot of people use birtee or tomahawk tees attached to a teeclaw.

This happens to the best of us. I think 9/10 people suffer from indoor swing syndrome. Keep playing. Give it a couple more weeks to really feel comfortable. It'll even out sooner or later and you'll be hitting it far.

Yes, this is the first time swinging indoors. Unfortunately it is still quite cold where I live (Chicago) and not a ton of golf ranges open at the moment. I will certainly try to go outdoors and check again. Good to know on the Tees, thanks. I guess I'll just need to play around with the GC2 location and see if I can find a way it incorporates the gel section and the range section where I can hit driver.

I ended up using four fairway sections of truestrike - 3 for buidling stance on, the gel section, then another for all the stuff - skytrak, tees, tee claws, balls etc. The tomahawk tees tied off to the claw or (I use a paper towel stand with four different tees tied off it) work great off the gel section. Using the fourth fairway section for the skytrak keeps it even with the gel surface and makes things easier to align. 1

I may be off base here, but I don't think it's just an indoor issue. I think that you think you hit the ball further than you do. According to Trackman's average carry distances for players on the PGA Tour, the average PW carry is 136 yards. That's average... so a PGA player hitting it 150 is the upper spectrum. I guess if you hit it as long as the greatest .00001 percent of the players on the planet.... then your PW is 150. I'm guessing it's not...

Not trying to start an argument here... just saying the "most likely" reality....

While you may be on to something here, I don’t think it’s fair to say that only .00001 of people in the world can hit far. It’s not that only they can hit it that far, they’re just the only ones that can hit that far while still being “straight” and doing so on command. Not to mention, pros can putt. Plenty of guys can hit a PW that far - that just can’t do it on command, consistently, and normally the rest of their game sucks ass so of course they never made off the local muni. Just not as far fetched as it may seem.

One other thing to consider is that on an actual course, especially in Chicago, you get mini flyer lies compared to a mat. I just went to FL for instance and was getting less distance off the tight lies than I'm used to in Chicago because of the increase in spin... I'd say a full club difference. Also it is sea level there, so minor effect too.

Irl, it's also easy to focus on total distance because you walk to your ball where as on the sim, it's easy to focus on carry distance with the follow cam.

Haha, I'm guessing almost everyone in this forum thought their LM was reading incorrectly when they first started hitting inside. If it really was hardware errors, one would expect a certain percentage of the errors on the long side...I don't think anyone has ever posted that.

Likely the indoor swing phenomenon, combined with hitting off a mat. Give it time.

Thanks, Mike. I played probably 6-7 rounds over the weekend and found that it got better. A few weird things still, but I suppose it can be attributed to ball striking. Regardless, it is an easy adjustment to add another club.

To your other question - for right handers, set truestrike up with 3 stance panels to the left (as you face screen), then the gel section, then the flat edge. Put the ball tray behind you, on the left. That way the gc2 can sit on a nice easy block/books/whatever and be levelled perfectly. Ignore the rubber tees, use tomahawk tees instead, they're great especially with a tee claw to stop them flying about. I have this exact setup, works like a charm.

This may seem like a silly question, I bought the tomahawk and teeclaw...how do you connect them to keep them from flying around?

Teeclaw screws into my gel section with the elastic strap tied to the base of the teeclaw. I'm a rightie, so teeclaw is back right by edge of mat, so Skytrak can't see it. Elastic strap just lays down across the mat, not stretched just lay loosely so the tomahawk doesn't fall over. The elastic loops around the tomahawk tee, and the teeclaw stops it flying about.

Just reporting back to those who are setting up for the first time and may see this thread in the future. I have found what the others said here to be accurate. Eventually you learn to swing regularly even though you are inside. I think my mat (TrueStrike) is overly punitive on fat shots, but I am okay with that given it will help my ball striking outdoors. What Wang said about flier lies in Chicago is absolutely true...I never really took that into account. All in all, I'd say I am adding a club to what I thought my distances were and it has been working out just fine. Thanks for the input all!

I once heard that Tiger very scientifically charted his carry distance and spin rates off of several surfaces, including putting green, fairway, hardpan, etc.
