  • TGC framerate plunges after two holes

Wondering if anybody around here has an idea.

Last night I started a round just like normal and everything seemed fine. After my drive on the second hole however my framerate dripped significantly. I normally am at 60 with occasional drops into the 50's but nothing significant. On the second hole it bounced between 10-25 and was virtually unplayable. I exited TGC and noticed my whole computer seemed sluggish so I restarted it and got back into TGC but was still seeing the very low framerates. I closed out and didn't notice anything abnormal in the task manager.

I decided to shut down the computer and let it stay off for the night. This morning I turned it back on and everything seemed fine so I figured it was a fluke. Again on the second hole I was playing, after I hit my second shot into the sand everything slowed down to a chug and I could barely use it. When I got out I started it back up in Windowed mode as I'm usually in fullscreen to see the task manager while I was playing and once again the task manager didn't show any alarming spikes. Still the framerate was awful.

I have an i7 4.0Ghz computer with 16gb of RAM and an NVidia GTX 970. I only use this computer for my simulator. Later I'll see if I can get in a round at Perfect Golf (assuming at the beginning everything seems fine) to see if things only slow down with TGC or it is simply after using the computer for 5-10 minutes. Both of the times this happened I was playing Magnolia 2016. If anybody has any thoughts on what is going on or what I should try I would really appreciate it.

    Thanks.

It sounds like heat but you shouldn't be having heat issues. Check the card temp.

How do I check the heat? I definitely think something is going on with my Graphics Card. I fired up PG and the same thing happened (worked fine for a little then framerate plunged). I'm guessing that either the graphics card stops working right or else it completely reverts to using the cpu and not using the gpu. A few other pieces of new information.

I went into GE Force experience and it said there was an updated driver available so I updated the driver. After I did that and restarted the computer my monitor started flashing in and out. I have two displays connected to my GPU and they are duplicated. My monitor is via DisplayPort and my projector is via HDMI. When my monitor flashes on and off my projector is fine. I'll try swapping the monitor and DisplayPort cable later to confirm that isn't the issue (I do have an extra of each) but I'm guessing something is going on with my GPU.

Is there any good test I can run to stress the GPU and get results that I can later point to? Seems to me like the GPU is failing. It should be under warranty (got the whole setup in November and guessing there was a 1 year warranty) but I want to get all the data to confirm that is where the issue is before I start tracking it down with the PC manufacturer.

      Thanks for the help.

Not sure if there are any computer experts around here but the issue seems to be with my CPU temps. I started up my computer and initially the CPU temp for all 4 cores were around 60-65 Celsius. My GPU was initially around 30-32 Celsius. After starting up TGC my CPU went to around 95 Celsius and my GPU was around 60-62 Celsius. After about 5 minutes of playing my GPU was up to 70-75 Celsius and my CPU cores were around 95-98 Celsius. The CPU Fan never peaked above 50%. From what I can gather the CPU temp is way too high. Here is a screenshot of my hardware after I shut down TGC and it was off for 2-3 minutes. If anybody has thoughts, please let me know. I obviously don't want to fry my CPU.

I don't personally know too much about the inner workings of computers, but did build my pc (with the help of YouTube). Not sure if it works, but would you be able to pop off the back of the computers tower case and literally just grab and actual fan or something and point it in there too cool it down. Obviously not a permanent solution but maybe you can do that just to see if it does cool the cpu and if that fixes everything. And if so you can just buy a cpu fan or two, attach it to the power supply and hopefully be good to go. Not sure if that will work but maybe something to try

Check here for "normal' cpu temperatures.

Google gaming PC temperatures. You'll find the resources. If you have a heat issue, there's ways around it.

I might be out of golfing for a while. Turns out the heatsink on my CPU is loose. I'm not too knowledgeable about computers and don't want to void my warranty. Waiting to hear back from my sales rep but I'm wondering if I'm going to have to send it back to be fixed. Really upsetting.

Check out a Cool Master Hyper 212 EVO. It's a CPU cooler. About $30 and works great!

This should be very easy to fix

First thing make sure you can remove the side of the pc case without removing any warranty void stickers if there are any there, just incase you do want to send it back.

If its stock Intel CPU cooler\fan they basically clip onto motherboard using 4 push down\twist turn clips on each of the corners.

This has probably come loose, it could also be the fan is not spinning ontop of the CPU heatsink but looking at your temps it is probably loose heatsink on one of the corners, but just check fan in plugged in and spins.

See below video for CPU install and fan, watch from 4 mins on to see fan\heatsink clips work.

Just to let you know 95c is very hot for your CPU and from above screenshot your CPU load was at 4% , this is basically when it will throttle down so your CPU will not burn out and damage itself. I would say once heatsink and fan is properly working your max CPU temp under 100% load would be under 70C your idle temps should be a lot lower.

Post another screenshot with temps after you have done above.

I would not use that PC at all until you get the temps sorted.

Thanks for the advice. I ended up taking it in for having the thermal paste applied. The company did it but it actually didn't solve the CPU temp issue (they ran a test afterwards and showed me the results). It turned out that my heatsink which was a waterblock had failed. The guy said the water was likely simply sitting there and not being circulated through the radiator. I ended up buying a new one with the installation included due to their earlier labor. After swapping it everything is supposedly fixed. In the end it cost me about $100 for the part (a new heatsink with water cooling) and the labor. Probably more than it needed to be but I'm just happy to have the issue resolved and am ready to move on.

Thanks for all the help on this thread.

Glad you got it sorted out and didnt cause any permanent damage from overheating. The CPU and GPU both will detect high temps and throttle down to avoid damage.

I recently had a CPU cooler fan stop working on my TGC machine. I wouldn't have noticed if I didn't have a see through side on my case. My temps never really went up more than 4 degrees or so. I built my own computer and chose a case that has 5 120mm fans and 1 big 200mm fan. All fans have 3 speeds and are run on low to keep the noise down. Adding a couple of additional fans is a great investment. Most gaming computers are more concerned with what they look like rather than how well they cool. 3 speed fans are about $15-20 and are totally worth replacing your existing fans. You will always have spots for additional fans. When installing these fans make sure that you have the correct air direction. One side of the case pulls air in and the other would exhaust it. For less than the cost of a water cooled system you can fill your case with 3 speed fans. Glad you didn't miss an event KS-man
