TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm (LIDAR)

I'm about 95% done, but I've already put A LOT of hours into this one. All I have left is to clean up some splines, replace some trees, and give it one more thorough check. Building this course forced me to learn multiple types of retaining walls, waterfalls, small creeks. I don't even want to know how many hours I put into the retaining wall on 17, but now I'm confident that I could build any course out there. The Unity engine leaves a lot to be desired from a design standpoint, but any course is possible if you have the patience.

This is the DMV's PGA tour stop and also Tiger's tournament that he used to alternate between this course and Congressional. I think the tournament has been on hiatus for the last couple of years but returning in 2021. I played it when it was known as TPC Avenel in the late 90's. It was redesigned in 2010 for the Senior Players Championship. The course was featured in the original PGA Tour Golf video game made by EA Sports in 1990. A good friend of mine was born into a wealthy family and his entire family are members of the club. Unfortunately he isn't a big golfer, and knowing how much it actually costs to bring a guest to play I haven't asked him... yet.

Hi - I just wanted to say thank you for the effort you put in to the TPC Potomac course for TGC19

I was a member there for about 7 years but moved away earlier this year. I have played "Avenel" hundreds of times (no exaggeration), and you did it a great job!!! I played it virtually yesterday and (as usual) it kicked my ass. Over the years, I hosted several friends with very low and HC's and The Beast never failed to bring people to their knees.....10,11 and 12 will ruin a good round!!

On the simulator, there are some wacky bounces and the rollouts are bit long on some shots vs real life, but the bunkering (they just completed a $ 1M bunker renovation in fall 19 / winter 20 - thanks PGA tour! )and angles look amazing !!

So, thanks - really enjoying it. Happy to provide more feedback if you want to keep tweaking

Thank you Cutt ! I'm going to finally get to play it again (I played it once as the original Avenel over 20 years ago) for real this year, and I'm really looking forward to it. I have a line on Congressional as well. I'm glad you enjoyed it and I hope you played the latest version which is just 'TPC Potomac' as the course name. The resource meter was full when I published it so I can't add any objects without removing others. I still have the course file but I don't plan on publishing again on TGC19. Hopefully the next version of TGC Sim allows the import of the older course files (and additional capacity in the resource meter). Let me know what changes you'd make to make it play more like it does IRL and I'll prep it for the next version.

I agree about the overall bounce and roll. Unfortunately the lower end of the firmness and roll sliders do not go low enough. Hopefully they also fix that in the next version.

bri5002 - I'll trade the course file for a guest round, and I'll pay the fees! I don't actually have 2K21 myself. My buddy who is also a member is going to take me out there this year, but he's not a golfer. He is a person with golf clubs that is member because all of the board members of his company are members. Would be nice to go with someone who actually plays the game!

I'll definitely publish it again whenever the next SIM version of TGC is released. Hopefully the course files are still compatible when that happens.

That's not a bad idea. A lot of the reference pictures are from the fall and it would look good with the different leaf colors.

I did the same thing with one of my courses, Olympic Country Club as it was a 27-hole course so I made 3 different 18-hole combinations of the course in three different themes, one for Spring/Summer lots of green and flowers, an Autumn version and a winter version brown Heavy rough all over the course.

I may also do something similar with my main country club course as that is the one I play the most and there are some things that I would like to fix. I think it is better alternative to a v2 and does really give a different feel to the course.

My 4th or 5th attempt at revising and optimizing this course has been published. I told mthunt I'd clean it up for the Wells Fargo this year. This was the 2nd course I designed and my skills with the tools have come a long way since then. This is as close as I'm going to get it to my current standards.

Published name is "TPC Potomac (Avenel Farm)'.

Played the new version last night and really enjoyed it! The narrow fairways appeared daunting at first, but the overall layout was open enough that it was easy to knock the ball around!
