  • TGC 2019 yardage cheat sheet

Created a quick cheat sheet for yardages. Easy to print out and keep handy so you don't always have to do the math.

Fairway Yards: 0% Light Rough and sand outside 40 yards: 7% Heavy Rough: 14%
    50 yards 53.5 yards 57 yards
    60 yards 64.2 yards 68.4 yards
    70 yards 75 yards 80 yards
    80 yards 85.6 yards 91.2 yards
    90 yards 96.3 yards 102.6 yards
    100 yards 107 yards 114 yards
    110 yards 118 yards 125 yards
    120 yards 128 yards 137 yards
    130 yards 139 yards 148 yards
    140 yards 150 yards 160 yards
    150 yards 160 yards 171 yards
    160 yards 171 yards 182 yards
    170 yards 182 yards 194 yards
    180 yards 192 yards 205 yards
    190 yards 203 yards 216 yards
    200 yards 214 yards 228 yards
    210 yards 225 yards 240 yards
    220 yards 235 yards 250 yards
Inside 40 yards: 40% sand penalty
    40 yards 56 yards
    30 yards 42 yards
    20 yards 28 yards
    10 yards 14 yards

Helps to know that that heavy rough shot from 130 really plays like a 150 yard shot. I assume most get to know this by heart with frequent play, but I think it could be helpful for the first few months to get going with.

I have thought about creating this exact thing but have been too lazy to actually sit down and do it. Thank you! Going to print this and post it on the wall by the keyboard. (Hopefully I'm not too lazy to at least do that lol).

Anybody know the how big in yards the circle is when you hit 'Q'? The radius.

No but I believe each grid line on the green represents 1 yard so you could count the number of grid lines inside the radius to determine it.

Happen to know the % for conditions such as pine straw and cartpath?

This is great. After drinking while golfing, math is hard.

This is very useful! Especially for guests. Thanks. Now someone just has to figure out the landing zone distances for the various clubs.

This is the area where the developers of the game just totally dropped the ball in my opinion. It would be so much more helpful to just show us the distance to a certain spot rather than showing us that it's a 3-wood to here or a 4-iron to here or whatever. I just want to stand on the tee and know that it's 234 to carry that bunker and 251 to reach the rough at the corner of the dogleg or whatever. Just let me move a cursor around that shows the distance to whatever it's pointing at. Pretty simple. I know you can use the mini map but it's so small that it's impossible to get any precise yardages from it. We need the mini map concept used for the actual view of the hole (and then there would be no need for the mini map). I don't know why they decided to do it the way that they did instead of going with the most obvious and most useful route. It's my biggest complaint about the game (one of my only complaints actually).

Agree. I guess it’s the way the console game is an Protee can’t change

There is a map button on the bottom right hand corner next to fly by view?? It has distances to bunkers, etc.

Thanks for posting, was looking for something like this, and to confirm the penalties from various surfaces.

Really the app should explicitly display the relative penalties on the screen, why leave people guessing...

I agree. If it's a set mathematical formula they may as well just give us the adjusted yardage instead of making us jump through hoops to calculate it. I think it would actually be pretty neat if the rough penalties were a range instead of a flat number. So instead of heavy rough being a 14% penalty, make it a 10-15% penalty so there's some randomness and unpredictability there. Part of the penalty of hitting out of rough in real golf is not knowing exactly how it will come out and not knowing exactly how far it might carry. Would place more of a penalty for not hitting fairways.

I took the original posters chart and added the 5 yard increments in between the numbers and then printed it out and hung it on the wall next to my clubs. So much quicker and easier!

Thanks for this! Also would be great to see it for other terrain like paths/pine.

Is it really true that a 50 yard sand shot should be played as 53 yards whereas a 40 yard shot should be played as 56 yards? (I understand the maths of it but just checking it is actually just a formula the game applies and you haven't oversimplified it?)

Yes that's correct. It seems weird, but the game had to choose a certain distance to make the cut off point between what would be considered a blast shot that you would use near the green versus a more traditional ball-first fairway bunker shot. And 40 yards was determined to be that cutoff point.

Love the idea guys - thanks! I wanted to make a nice printable to laminate and post in the garage, so I stole both of your ideas and made it into a one-pager.

And not to be "that guy", but I believe it says that the lie causes a yardage penalty, meaning for example, it will deduct 14% from YOUR distance hit on heavy rough. So rather than add that much to the distance given with 1.14 x yardage, I backed into that number by dividing the yardage by .86. Not a huge difference, but that's why my numbers are slightly different. Sorry, the math nerd in me couldn't help it.

I figured I'd share my version here too - thanks again for the idea!

Dumb question from a TGC 2019 newb here...is the yardage impacted on shots that are just played alone in a "local match" or is it only when you play in a tournament or society that the lie impacts the yardage?

You are 100% not bring 'that guy'...it actually makes a big difference in the sand < 40* yards (see below), so thanks! Is that definitely what the game does though? I know logically it does - long grass has an effect on your ball, it doesn't make the course longer! But other posts in the forums suggest it is a simple 1.14x calc. (Again, logically strange, but if that's what the game does then who are we to judge!)

                          * I see also that your sheet uses 50 yards at the cut off where other forums suggest it's 40?
                      Working...
