  • Real putting vs sim

i have just built a Skytrak TGC simulator and last night tried sim putting for the first time. In real golf my putting speeds are completely a feel thing that I try not to think about. Yet on the sim it is all distance and I struggled getting it right. Today I played in league and had no feel for distance. I hit them long and short. Anyone else have experience with this and suggestions on how to putt with feel in sim and also in real life with distance?

My 2 cents. It's as much feel in sim golf as it is in real life. With that said, you need to adjust green configurations as best you can to mimic your real life courses. Otherwise you can really screw yourself once you get back out in the real world. In short, you need to get familiar with it and adjust. Shouldn't take very long.

General guideline that could help. For every inch uphill/downhill add or subract in feet of putt length. Example: putt is 36 feet and 7 inches downhill. You need to "imagine" yourself hitting a 29 foot putt. 12 foot putt and 7 inches uphill should be hit as a 19 footer.

At times you should adjust for sever slope. Example: 26 foot putt with 12 inches downhill that is severe could mean that you need to hit it as a 8/9 foot putt. Hope this helps...

I guess in real life I have no idea how long a putt is. I don't measure whereas with clubs I know my distances. I guess it's just something I'll have to learn/study. So how do I configure greens to match what I am used to? I'll look tomorrow at settings.

I don't putt in my sim as I don't want to mess with my real life putting.
I find I have the same distance problem with chipping around the green though.
I know the yardage for all my irons when hitting them full - but trying to hit a 58deg wedge 33 yards is usually something I'd do by eye. Generally you figure out where you want to chip to, and how much run / slope etc.
Takes a bit of getting used to!

I was reluctant to start putting on my sim as well. My old RedChain software was not very realistic. However, putting on TGC is great. The ball physics are excellent. It takes a while to switch from the visual to feel. First thing is that you want to find green settings that match your local courses. Secondly, it takes practice and eventually you will trust your stroke. IRL, my putting has improved because of the sim.

I would say what helped me is get the feel and the distance, like if it's 15' i know I have to hit the ball hard enough to tap the screen from where I stand. Pick spots and get the feel to those spots and then add or subtract ( this is what helped me)
