  • Simulator to real course transition

What are people seeing after spending significant time on in their simulator then hitting the course for the first time? Where I live the season is crazy short so I will be seeing more time on the sim than I ever will in real life until I retire that is. I am just wondering if improvement on the sim translates well to real world.

Here is a thread where people have discussed that. Most people see at least some improvement, but it depends on what level you are at now and how much you currently practice vs how much you will with a simulator.
I'm ready to get a launch monitor, namely a GC2, for indoor garage use. Just wondering what impact a launch monitor has had on people's real life golf games?

Thanks for the link when I searched that did not come up for me. It is exactly what I was looking for.

Reading through that thread my game should improve with the sim since I rarely go to the range when we are in season just due to the logistics. With the sim now that I can practice anytime I want I am spending at least a couple hours a day 4 to 5 days a week on the range and/or playing a round. Initially I am seeing a lot of improvement with consistency and being able to work on shots I never really had the time to work on before just the shear ability to swing clubs for the 6 months we lay dormant up here should translate. Thanks again.

I used my protee sim everyday last winter (live in Ontario). I mainly wanted to straighten out my driver. With the path and club face data I grooved my swing to play a straight drive or a slight draw. It was an incredible help with that. I am a 7 handicap and my overall score dropped 1.7 strokes per 18 holes. My irons were actually a little worse and I couldn't seem to hit them on line. Not the sims fault. This winter I am going to work hard on my iron game.
One thing that was a pleasant surprise was how much my short game improved. I am hitting my short chips and pitches way more consistent now. And I believe that putting has to improve when you're constantly hitting putts from 8 feet to a hole without worrying about break and/or speed. Starting them online more consistently for sure.
Plus if you're playing the weekly tournaments it helps with hitting shots under pressure.

Thanks for the reply. It's great to hear being able to work on something and have it show up on the course. I am hoping for the same. In my case I need work all around. I really need a lot of work with anything below a PW. I do not even take them out of the bag on the course. Instead I just got really good at manipulating a 7 iron for all these shots even out of the traps but that is obviously a band aid. On the sim I am starting to see some improvement with distance control and spin. One other thing I like about playing a round at leisure is being able to take a little more time and get better at course management. That has always been a down fall of mine, I was always just grip it and rip it never really considered laying up when that was the smarter move.

I will begin to join the weekly tournaments shortly. I want to work on a few things first.

One thing you have to worry about sim play. Is developing what many people call the indoor swing. If you do not have plenty of room to swing comfortably and you adjust your swing in order not to hit a wall or whatever, you will take that swing to the course. Hopefully that makes since. When I first started hitting on my sim I was in a basic garage. I would alter my swing with my driver in order not to hit the ceiling. Messed me up for a long while. I finally just would only hit irons. Helped my iron game out a lot! I also took a lot of videos and would send them into people like Haney and Meandmygolf. Also helped out a lot. I finally have a place where I can hit all clubs with full swings. I am hoping to see a big difference in my game once it warms up enough to go play. Best of luck!

Md, that makes perfect sense and I think when I first installed it I was experiencing some of that. I was all over the place with my shots so started to break it back down to the basics and realized I was locking my wrists through the whole swing. I am finding if I am not thinking about it I revert back to doing it a little at a time. I have been using the range on ST to warm up before starting a round to stop from doing this. My area is not ideal I have 10' 6" ceilings so good there but only 12' of width so my set up is pushed to the right to keep away from the left wall. There is plenty of room for my swing and the more I swing the more I am trusting it. Thanks for the input.
