  • Best simulator for no net/screen

Hi all, I'm hoping I can get some good advice on a simulator (with no net) please. I'm a 6 handicapper looking to improve but also have fun during the winter months.

This summer I've been down to my local club and had a go with the trakman and loved it, seeing all the numbers etc was brilliant. I also had a go using toptracer at the driving range which is great too, especially the playing courses feature. The range is just a bit too far away and not the cheapest so hoping to set something up at home. I can't afford any of these simulators but would be willing to spend up to £2000 perhaps for something if it is worthwhile.

The problem is, my conservatory is plenty high enough to swing a club but isn't quite big enough to put up a net or screen. So I'm hopefully going to hang a rug in the corner of the room and hit foam balls or those "almost golf balls" into it. The rug will be about 6 foot in front of the ball and there would be about 6 foot of space behind the line of the ball. Not the best setup I know, but hopefully there is something out there that I can use. When summer comes around again I might get myself a net to use outside and hit real balls into it.

I want to use the simulator to improve my game and to have fun playing different courses and maybe get involved in some online tournaments etc which sound really interesting as I'm very competitive! My first session on the trakman showed I have an in to out swing with an angle of around 8 degrees which I've worked on to get down to about 6 now. I want to keep working on it to get it down to around 2 or so eventually and get my handicap down to a similar number.

I've been back and forth several times having read lots of great advice on here about the pros and cons of each. This has been my thought process.....

Read great reviews about the accuracy of Skytrak (£2000) but ruled it out due to no net/screen.
Almost bought optishot 2 (£400) because it reads club head path and face angle and could use foam balls (or even none at all!) but then read about the problems with lighting (surely wouldn't work well in a conservatory?). Also, I then read lots of people choosing RMotion over Optishot due to less problems and better gameplay with TGC. If RMotion was $100 like some people have mentioned I would buy it instantly, but it's actually £350 in the UK so is it worth that? Will it give me accurate enough data to improve my game as well as being fun to play online?

Then I read about these almost golf balls and how you can apply percentage or yardage boosts to give accurate readings for the Skytrak or Mevo+. So I wondered if it is worth spending a bit more and going for the Skytrak or Mevo+ (£2000)? Or is it a waste spending so much on a simulator if I can only use foam/almost golf balls indoors? Lots of people seem to be favouring the Mevo+ over Skytrak now due to it being much better outside. I do like the option of being able to take it down to the driving range to compare with top tracer or just to the local basic driving range to get some data. And if I'm really enjoying using it I might buy a net to use with a real ball out in the garden in summer to get the best use out of it (UK weather dependent!).

A lot of info there, so thank you very much for reading, any help would be amazing. I'd be particularly interested in people who have chosen RMotion over Optishot or vice versa. And similarly Mevo+ over Skytrak or vice versa. Also those who have upgraded from the Optishot/RMotion to a Skytrak/Mevo+. And if anyone has a similar, problematic setup using these balls then that would be amazing to hear from you.

    Thanks,
    Steve Collins.

What about a used SkyTrak, and a net return pro? Golf swing systems do the net here in the uk, but as the world has gone mad it’s showing out of stock at the minute...

sounds like you might be pretty tight on space, what are your total room dimensions?

Thanks for the response Ganders. It's a 3x3m square but there is a couch and TV in there so it's not just my golf cave unfortunately. But I can stand in the middle of the room and hit diagonally which gives me about 6/7 feet behind me and 6/7 foot in front of me to the corner of the room. But I wouldn't be able to fit a net in the corner. And a shank with a real ball in the conservatory wouldn't go down well with the wife haha!

Used Skytraks seem to be going for a similar price to the brand new ones from what I've seen so if I was going to stump up for one I'd prefer to just buy new I think.
