  • Outdoor Launch Monitor that can be used at night

    Hi,
I am new to the forum from Scotland. Due to indoor space constraints, I am limited to practicing outdoors in the garden (in the winter that means usually in the dark with an outside light). I currently have a net and can happily hit balls there. Knowing how far I am hitting each club would be useful but as a high handicapper (17) my biggest problem is consistency and avoiding pulls and pushes. At the driving range I can see this and adjust accordingly but hitting into a net I have no idea.

As it is primarily a training aid I’m not that bothered about playing simulated courses. A low cost launch monitor like the Mevo or ES14 would meet my distance needs but not direction. I wondered if a combination of OptiShot 2 for direction and launch monitor for distance would be a good combo which I could do for under £500 from ebay.

My top price range would be a Skytrak or Mevo Plus but I’m nervous about spending over £2000. Would both work at night under poor artificial lighting? I believe the Mevo Plus would definitely be better for the summer months. I’ve also read mixed reports on how accurate flight path is simulated.

Perhaps I should start with a basic launch monitor to keep the swing grooved and get to the driving range to check on direction.
I would welcome your views on what systems might work for me?

    Thanks

Any radar based launch monitor should be able to work in the dark. I am not sure how much light you need for a camera based system.

Both mevo+ and Skytrak should work in complete darkness. The mevo+ is radar based which doesn't use light at all and the Skytrak used infrared light built in to the unit to see the ball, which is why they tell you to avoid red tees. The Skytrak can run into issues though if there is too much light like direct sunlight, so keep that in mind as well.

I also have my setup outdoors (on a rooftop balcony), and mostly practice at night and SkyTrak works fine with no issues in the dark. While hitting into the net does make it a little more difficult to gauge direction, the launch monitor also gives you that feedback as well and you quickly can understand when you have pushed or pulled the ball. I would also not discount the option of sim play even though you will have an outside setup. I have a 32-inch 4k monitor that I use for my daily PC work and then move it outside each time I play.
