  • Broken clubs on simulator turf

I play at a local indoor place that has some nice Trackman setups. In the last two months I’ve broken 3 irons - all right at the end of the shaft.

I’ve played golf for 30 years and I’m currently a 10. I’ve never broken a club in my life before this. Is it common to see clubs damaged when playing indoors daily? I put about an hour a day on the simulator.

I’m scared to keep playing, but with the snow around here, I can’t play outside for another month or two.

That sounds incredibly odd. I broke a 3wd but was due to a faulty shaft end, and was replaced under warranty. I would check at the place you are hitting at and see if the hitting surface is padded or not... If its not appropriately padded, I wouldnt risk my clubs in there. Coming in steep is going to be death for your joints, let alone your clubs.

As my name implies, I have a steepish swing, but nothing that would stand out if you saw me at the range. Guess I’d better work on shallowing the downswing some more, just to be safe.

      I appreciate the replies.

Hitting on turf is definitely harder on the shafts than hitting in grass. I am going to try the divot action mat to see if it takes some of this stress off of clubs and joints.

It's definitely not common. I don't think too many of us would be in this hobby if breaking a club per month was the norm. Like SkeetShooter suggested, it sounds like an issue with the mats. Is anyone else there breaking clubs or is it just you?

I’m too embarrassed to publicly admit that I broke clubs, so I’ll never know if anyone else is having issues, lol. I’ll peak under the mat next time to see if it’s padded or just concrete.

I've broken 2 driver shafts this winter.

Do you take divots with your driver?

the bottom looks like it's been coated CCE golf mat plastic.. sometimes a hit/skim the mat.

Ah, yes. That happens to my hybrid and 3-wood. Surprised that's enough to break a shaft.

I had a couple of irons broke within the same week (8, 6) back in October. Those two clubs were used fairly frequently on the sim since 2017; between warm-ups, swing change practices, sim play...
I mostly hit thin but do get the occasional really fat shots. 2017-2019 shots were done on the CCE mat, 2019-present are now Fiberbuilt. I assume the frequent usage, especially prior to 2019, contributed to the faster wear & tear on the clubs.
No issues with any other clubs but I did end up replacing the iron shafts after the last season was over.

I’ve been hitting at least 100 balls a day since I completed my sim room about a month ago. I use the divot action strip and have had no problems with joints.

Only when I'm mad - I think I only broke one one the mat

The iron bends at the bottom of ferule and eventually breaks. I broke a lot when I was younger. If you straighten them out every now and then they won't break.
