  • A dumb question about putting

I'm close to pulling the trigger on a new system. It seems the hitting mat is quite thick and backed with foam while the "turf" area between the screen and the hitting mat is thinner. How does the putting work? Do I putt off the hitting mat and have the ball drop down to the thinner green or do I need to put something under the turf to make it even with the hitting mat?

Putting experience depends on the system you choose and the environment you have. If you have a sizable dedicated space that has a level floor than you may be able to use the radar based systems. If you have a smaller space and/or have a hitting platform separate from turf you may be better off with a camera based system. I have Uneekor QED and find the putting to be very good. The sizable hitting zone it offers allows me to putt off a smooth surface rather than my Fiberbuilt hitting strip. I have turf ramp that goes from my hitting platform to turf. Works well.

Having a level surface from the hitting mat to the screen definitely helps you judje the speed better by giving you a continuous roll all the way there without having the ball fall off the edge of the mat and disrupt the roll. You can just place a putting mat between the hitting mat and the screen and raise it to the same height as the hitting mat.

Okay. I've seen a lot of pics of setups and most look like the hitting mat is a fair bit higher than the turf so I was just wondering how this might work. I'm looking at an EYE XO system and trying to figure out the bits and pieces.

My hitting mat is flush with the grass carpet up to the screen. I use a quattro mat so it provides some area for the ball to roll anyway and then I get another ~8 feet from the grass carpet. I was skeptical of putting initially on the sim and historically struggled as feel putter. With the simulator, I've learned to put more analytically meaning it tells the the distance and up/down measurement and then I have worked on devising distance based on length of backswing. This has translated really well to outdoors except my golf buddy gives me grief for pacing off all my putts!
