Display resolution confusion

Getting myself totally confused and in circles.
I have a 16:10 projector 1920x1200 and running Trackman 4 with their Virtual Golf 2. GPU is Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060.

I have the projector display cloned with my pc monitor.

if I select monitor as source the resolution can be 1920x1080. If I select the projector as source the resolution can be 1920x1200.
selecting the latter pulls the image more on the vertical using all of the screen and only 2 bars left and right. Whereas the 1920x1080 I have to have a small border all the way around due to the positioning of the projector.

so 1920x1200 fills the projector screen top and bottom and leave the pc monitor with black bars left and right.

when I launch into a course for game or practice the image on the projector reverts to what appears to be the equivalent of 1920x1080 regardless.

what do I need to set up please to get the best image on the projector. I don’t use the monitor only for navigating into the game. I believe I have to select settings both within windows and also Nvidia software menu itself.

if it makes any difference I have the projector connected to the Gpu’s DisplayPort 1.4 via a DP/HDMI adaptor. And the monitor is into the hdmi 2.1 port of the GPU with hdmi cable.

When you clone 2 displays, the max resolution is limited to the lowest capability of the displays, so in this case, you're limited to 1920x1080. If you Extend the displays, then you can set the resolution differently but then the desktop windows are separate rather than cloned. I think you can use OBS or OnTopReplica to copy the projector window onto the monitor display but I haven't done this before. I'm sure other people have done this.

It does ask me which display I’m wanting to clone from. So if I clone from the projector I can choose a resolution up to 1920x1200. If I choose clone from monitor I can choose 1920x1080. The same resolution then applies to both (I believe?).
so I guess my question is should I select clone from projector at 1920x1200 given that’s my main display, and just ignore the black side bars on the smaller monitor as a small consequence. Will this give the best overall picture on the projector given that it’s native 1920x1200 anyway?
the fact that certain elements of Trackman software appear to change to 1920x1080 when in use even though I have set the resolution at 1920x1200 is that because the software simply overrides to the in built resolution? And possibly the reason why when in game mode if I change between 1920x1200 and 1920x1080 I appear to notice no difference in quality or graphics on the projector display?

Oh I understand, so when you clone 1920x1200, the monitor has black bars. I would prioritize the monitor you care about the most. In the case of a golf sim, I would prioritize the projector. Not much difference in 1920x1200 vs 1920x1080 except you get 120 more vertical pixels with the 1920x1200. If it was me, I'd select that resolution. As far as the Trackman software, I'm not familiar with it. It might not support 1920x1200 or maybe there's settings in the software to select the resolution. TGC2019 for example has game resolution settings.

Just reading this with interest. I’m having similar issues but when I duplicate screens the projector will only display the 1920x1080 as that is the highest resolution the pc monitors will go. When you say prioritise how do you do that? As when I select duplicate in display settings it automatically selects the pc monitor.

Within the Nvidia graphics card menu you can choose ‘set up multiple displays’ and then right click on the display icon and select ‘clone from...’
