Hi everyone, so I do not have a dedicated space for my Simulator, so I utilize a bay in my 2 car garage as the simulator area and park my car back when I'm done (or when I'm feeling like it.)
I use a Sports screen roll up on the side where the garage door goes up and have high lift garage doors installed. Previously, I had used a Fiberbuilt Studio mat and recently upgraded the hitting strip to a Holy Grail Strip from GungHo Golf. I couldnt park the car and keep the mat down because of worries of destroying the fiberbuilt mat (I didnt even want to try risking damage to it) so I came up with a different solution.
Meister Mats out of Oregon make a 1.5" EVA foam mat that is supposed to be able to take driving on and even parking cars on it and not deform or create lasting impressions. My intent is that I can drive over a small portion of the mat on one side, and miss the side that has the hitting strip, as that will go between the tires of my vehicles.
I've cut out a section in the EVA foam mat and have inserted the Holy Grail mat into it and have also insert a tee holder into the forward portion of the mat. It sits perfectly flush with the Mat and still retains its great forgiveness properties... I probably could even put the Fiberbuilt strip in there as well if I wanted to. Since I have a Skytrak I have mine on a slider which I can move when hitting driver. I've tested hitting about a dozen extremely fat shots with a wedge into the mat to see if the mats would move or become separated, and so far so good. I have 3 guys coming over tomorrow night for a bit of fun, so I'm curious to see how it holds up to that.
Additionally, I have not yet secured it down to the floor as I want to make sure that when I line up my car to park that I get that set first before I put the mat in the place it will ultimately stay.
I created a runway for putting and I can say that it rolls really well, but obviously extremely fast because there is so little resistance on the ball. Also its nice because it acts as a drop zone for when you hit and the balls tend to stay on that mat that is in the landing area.
Concerns:
* Wear and tear? How well will this EVA hold up to constant shifting of my feet on the hitting matt? Obviously hitting in spikes might be a bad idea. I'll give it a try, but I think its going to tear up the foam.
* There is a section where the outer trim piece secures (pictured below) that looks like it will separate easily. My inclination is to secure it with some tape or adhesive once I've committed to a final location.
* Dirt: Its probably going to show dirt pretty easily, but because of the nature of these and being non-absorbing, should be pretty easy to clean off. Only time will tell.
