  • Basic Design Question - Impact Screen + Enclosure

Early in the planning stages of my garage sim. The big hurdle before I take the deep dive is to figure out how I am going to make the Impact screen and enclosure work.. It needs to be semi movable or retractable so I don't get divorced ha!..

I have uploaded a picture where I have tried to outline the dimensions. Different ceilings cause some complications as well as the garage door rails. The HomeScreen wall mount looked like a possibility, but I think the rail likely gets in the way. MicroBay looks solid but I doubt it would fit under the rails and therefore would be losing some depth in room. I could probably push this to side or something.

Last thing to consider is that I am probably going to need to go overboard with side and top protections since I am not a pro golfer and want to stay married.. Leaning towards black curtains or something but still open to suggestions.

I look forward to any suggestions or help for bay/enclosure/scree.. Maybe this isn't even possible, hopefully is because it is the only room I have a chance at fitting it in..

    Thanks!

(3rd car garage not in picture but is on the left)
    (Plan to use SkyTrak)

It might be worth looking into raising the garage door tracks. I just had mine raised and have plenty of room now.

Unfortunately, I had to convert from extension to torsion so it was a bit pricey. But if you already have a torsion setup you might be able to do it on the cheap by just replacing the upper part of the tracks and moving the motor or putting in a wall mount motor.

Yea. I got one quote for that.... Probably around $2k. Was thinking converting to a side mount motor would be enough.. Around $800. But IDK anymore

Side mounts work really well for this. I was amazed how quiet they were as well. They got my rails up to within about 3" of the ceiling (Raised the rails in my case over 2 feet). By going up they also get shorter (something I did not realize but also frees up additional space).

I could also just use a Net and an extra TV I have. Maybe not perfect but maybe fit the space I have better and would still be fun

A net is much quieter as well. Something they don't tell you is how loud a retractable (floating) standard impact screen is. With driver ball speeds it sounds like thunder and I can feel the pressure change in the garage when the ball hits the screen. If your screen is fixed you can place heavy material behind it like foam or a mattress which really deadens the sound.

Thanks Preludesam. I am getting on board with this idea. Have an extra 45 inch TV laying around too so that's a plus.

Is Net Return Pro the way to go for Nets?

Can I hit really close to the net? How much bounce back should I expect?

I would get the side barriers but any suggestions for additional netting on the corners/sides. Was original going to get black curtains but dont want that if I am using a TV I think

Net Return Pro is awesome. I have one on my garage as my ceiling in the basement does not allow me to swing driver. Be as close as you like (without risking impacting the net in your follow-trough obviously) and go for it. There is zero bounce back. The ball is absorbed into the net and falls to the ground at the bottom of the net. I really like the system.

Not sure but I would bet there is low-cost netting if you wanted to build it yourself versus going with the pre-built option.

I would say you can hit from any distance as long as your club won't get caught up in the netting. I think this depends on if you are securing it to the floor or letting it hang loosely. The loose ones have a near-zero return but if you make it tight it may bounce back like a trampoline.

Also, be aware the ball pulls the net pretty far when hitting into it. I am not sure about the recommendation on the distance the net should be from a wall but I would guess it's a least a foot or probably more.

I would get the side barriers but any suggestions for additional netting on the corners/sides.
Not sure, I used curtains 6" from the sidewall but they are much heavier than netting.

I would look at doing a retractable screen and retractable side curtains. Take a look at the video here. https://youtu.be/Nu_98Gl9z7o
