Projector question for sim/theater

I wasn't sure if this is the correct forum (admins please move if necessary).

I have a general question regarding my sim build. Short overview - I will likely end up with a 9x9 enclosure giving me a 1:1 ratio screen. From what I've read, it's preferable to simply project 4:3 image and live with the fact that I will have some black bars while playing golf.

However, I was hoping to use the space as a theater as well. My question is can I use the same projector with 4:3 for golf and then switch to 16:9 for theater content? Does it require moving the projector to accommodate the difference is image size? I've searched a bit on the forum, but I can't seem to find information on this subject but I'm sure I'm not the first one that's encountered this.

You could use black bars since you’re wanting to double as a theater. You would have to move the projector on rails if you wanted to switch back and forth between full screen sim and theater mode. If you wanted a full square screen you could fill out the edges with a custom resolution. Linked instructions for full screen. Since you have a square image you would use 1080x1080 instead of 1920x1080.
