  • Newbie Sim Build Questions

I’m based in the UK and have just had a newborn so I need to put a simulator in the garage. I’ve got a really good deal on a truestrike mat which should arrive next week. I’ve just ordered an impact screen and some bunjee ball cords. I’ve wooden beams in the garage and will hang the impact screen from them.

    A couple of questions:

    1. What size eye hooks do I need to attach the impact screen. I assume I screw the hooks under the beam?

    2. Do I actually need an archery net to sit behind the screen? I’ve seen conflicting opinions.

    3. is 9ft high ceiling playing with fire for hitting driver with me being 6ft?

    4. I’ve a concrete floor, what is everyone doing with the bottom of the impact screen?

    Thanks in advance.

1- Doesn't matter, but you may be better off hanging a rod, then you don't have to worry about the eye hooks being lined up. You can eye hook at each end to put a little tension on the screen to get the wrinkles out.
2-For me it definitely helps to deaden the ball and seems to make the screen last longer.
3-Totally dependent upon your swing plane, the more upright you are, the more likely you are to need more height.
4-it's better to have something to cushion the ball when landing. I started with some of those precut indoor outdoor mats.

The EVA gym floor mats work great for flooring under the impact screen.

      Something like these

I am 80% through my build. Garage with Beams sounds a similar set up to mine.

        1. What size eye hooks do I need to attach the impact screen. I assume I screw the hooks under the beam?
My beams run at a 90degree angle to the screen, i used wire rope and some carabiners in a shower curtain fashion
I just had 2 hooks at either end and used some adjustable turnbuckle tnetioners to tighten the wire (really useful things)

        2. Do I actually need an archery net to sit behind the screen? I’ve seen conflicting opinions.
I have a archery net screen, really happy with it, i have also placed a net behind to allow a bot more flex in the screen

        3. is 9ft high ceiling playing with fire for hitting driver with me being 6ft?
I am 6ft 4 and had and 8ft/2.4m ceiling, i could only swing an 8 iron without hitting the beams (My swing is quite steep though)
I cut away 3 beams after doubling up on the 2 either side and placing some reinforcement timbers in the bottom 3rd of the eaves
Luckily i had space in the eaves , Now at 10 ft which is plenty so 9ft may be enough with a standard or shallow swing
One of my friends has as shallow swing and the concern is more about hm hitting the wall behind him than the beam height

4-it's better to have something to cushion the ball when landing. I started with some of those precut indoor outdoor mats.
I have the cheap amazon jigsaw foam mats under my artifical grass, both help to cushion the ball on landing
Padding the ceiling and walls should be a priority for safety, i have experienced a golf ball ping off a brick wall and although it then hit the screen it was 'squeky bum' time.

UK based here too. I bought a piece of cheapish green carpet and carpeted the whole floor of my 15' x 10' space, also using lots of old underlay I had in the attic. I also bought a bay, basically metal poles forming a frame, with cloth sides and roof. That makes it easier to make safe the more dangerous bits you might clatter off with a shot. I finished the walls with two colours of green carpet tile onto plasterboard (wallboard) and that does, I have to say, look classy. My screen is dreadful as I bought a "framed" screen. By which I mean it is basically a leather rectangle with eyelets sewn in. It is also double skinned, a mixed blessing. The problem is, any looseness inside the "frame" cannot be mitigated with bungies and clips as they only pull on the leather frame, not what's inside it. The good news was, it took the company 3 attempts at getting my dimensions right, and didn't even then. But as they never collected the bad ones, I've used one of them behind my main screen as a buffer. At some point I'll cut the material out of the frame and tension it with clips and bungees. Too lazy to do it so far. Good luck with the build.

Thanks for all the responses folks, really helpful.
I got a few days over the weekend and this week to work on

I’m going to fill a gutter pipe with sand to stop the bottom of the screen moving.

I think I’ll have to remove a beam or two. Anything longer than a 4 iron is iffy. With the Astro and truestrike mat, I’ve lost another couple of inches in ceiling height.

            Next round of questions:

            1. What’s the best low cost option for a projector? I’ll likely be starting with a Garmin R10 and will upgrade down the road.

            2. Thinking of putting some black fabric around the screen to make it look a bit neater. Has anyone done this?

Was it a big job removing the beams? Ideally I’d remove two, there is lots of space above.
