  • What do you think, help appreciated

So I have a room 12x10x9hi. I can swing up to a 3 wood with the net about 2 ft from the wall. What I am thinking is use 2x4 boards screw to wall, use plywood and put the 1/2 rubber mats on the plywood and then use 3 to 6" foam on the mats and hit directly into foam for more room. What do you all think. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you

I think the ball is going to bounce back too fast if you hit straight into a padded wall

Not sure I'm following. Are you wanting to not use the net and hit into the padded wall instead? If so, I agree with Outlaw, that ball is gonna shred and compress that foam, get to the rubber mat, and come back at you like a missile.

If you're trying to gain some space you could hang an impact screen instead. In general you can hang those about 1 foot from the wall without causing issues.

You might try a sheet of 3" memory foam (like a mattress topper). I have a sheet behind my screen (not against wall wall) but no bounce backs.

How close do you expect the teeing position to be to the wall? Folks at 8' away get a small impact zone. I suspect you'll be closer. Obviously need something that absorbs the impact, but might not need it across the entire wall when hitting that close.

12x10 floor space would be too tight for me.

12 feet is generally accepted as the min width for an offset hitting area. I have seen smaller but it becomes very uncomfortable but in any case you are good there. I would not try to mount the screen directly to the wall. Build it out a minimum of 9" (preferably 12") and run your screen (or net) across using bungees on the top and sides. Where you will have issues is hitting distance back from the screen (or net). 10 feet (9 feet remaining after screen) is really tight and you will risk hitting the rear wall in your swing. You can make the ceiling height work.

Can you move the rear wall at all? Can you create a pony wall in lieu of removing it completely? We need to work with what you have, but this is right on the edge of being dangerous and/or creating weird swing thoughts. My two cents.

From experience, memory foam needs time to react to be effective, much more than the milliseconds it takes for a golf ball to impact & rebound. I tried it, but I couldn't use it. It just doesn't respond quickly enough. It looks good when you see how much it compresses and how slowly it rebounds, but in real life if you hit a golf ball 125mph into it the bounce back is pretty dramatic.

In addition, jasonreg's point about weird swing thoughts in entirely on point. GullLakeMI says 12x10 is too small and he's correct also. You might be able to pull it off, but if you are thinking it's going to help your game I just can't see it.

I would think not getting hurt by a comebacker would be a bit more important than a little more cost for protection.
