  • New shed golf simulator - screen size

I am currently attempting to design a custom shed for a golf simulator but I am stuck picking out the screen size.

The shed is most likely going to be 16x28 (interior ~15.5x27.5) with 9'9" side walls and gambrel roof. The shed will mostly be used for the golf sim, but I would like the option to watch sports or movies. I want the screen to be as large as possible which would mean 1 of these 3 options:

    16:9 - 8 x 14 screen
    16:10 - 9 x 14 screen
    4:3 - 10 x 13 screen

I believe the sized above are the largest screen that will fit in my shed for each aspect ratio. I would love to have a 16:9 sim screen but I think 8' (would end up being closer to 7.5 viewable screen) is shorter than I want.

Does anyone have any thoughts for what size screen would be best?

Also depends to a degree what projector you will be using. That said, 16:10 is a great aspect ratio for sims and would be the most immersive IMO. That said, 7.5 to 8 feet is plenty high. Can't really go wrong with any of them. I would order them as:
    1. 16:10 - 9 x 14 screen
    2. 16:9 - 8 x 14 screen
    3. 4:3 - 10 x 13 screen

Assuming I go with the 9x14 screen, does it make more sense to get a native 16:10 or 16:9 projector? It seems like there are a lot more options for 16:9 projectors. I'd also take projector recommendations.

I am also thrown off by this diagram as I am attempting to pick out a projector. The "+46" appears to show that the projector has to be 46 inches above the top of the screen? That doesn't make sense to me. The image would be blocked by even a small enclosure. Am i reading this correctly?

I believe this is showing that basically the lens is centered in your image. It's definitely not above the screen. If you look at the Optoma GT1080 which is what I have, you will get a number that shows -X where the negative means it's that many inches above the top of the image. For me, I think it's about 13" or so above the image. Sometimes referred to as vertical offset. The Benq usually has less vertical offset compared to optoma, at least when i was looking.
