I’m looking for advice on what material can be used to protect the roller on a Par2Pro retractable screen. Does anyone have insight into a material they used and to what extent that this material needs to fall below the roller tube to ensure there is no direct contact from shots?

I used gutter foam from Home Depot. Very happy with the result. Hit thousands of shots and no problems. Even hit the foam with a few lob wedge balls and worked as it should. I've attached some pics to give you an idea of the set-up. -

Looks like you just cut into a circular gutter foam and slipped around roller at the top of the screen? Do you have to take this on/off every time screen is rolled up/down.
I’m planning on hitting at a fairly close distance, so concerned with bounce back from just that… I was thinking of dropping baffling just in front of this too, to provide added resistance to velocity of ball heading directly at the roller.Comment

Nothing is slipped around the roller. It's gutter foam that comes in wedge shaped 4 ft. lengths for $6. I stapled a strip of 2" wide heavy duty velcro to the ceiling - let' say 'hook' side (I have black carpet tile over OSB for my ceiling protection). Then pealed the backing to expose the adhesive of the opposite strip - the 'loop' side - stuck it to the foam and hen then up to the ceiling to match 'loop' and 'hook'. You do need to do this with the screen rolled up. Just get the foam as close to the rolled up screen as you can. When the screen is down you will have a gap between screen and foam and balls can get behind it. I've probably had 5 or 6 balls go between the screen and foam but it's to be expected.
