After years of dreaming, hoping to make a reality. I'm hoping some of you who have gone or are going through this journey might be able to some feedback. I would greatly appreciate any insight you may have.
Space: Tandem garage stall (11'W x 10'H x 15'L-extra available due to tandem )
Frame: Using 1" EMT to create a frame/screen that can be pivoted from width dimension to length dimension. I will have about 4' for area behind the screen for storage/workbench that should be used infrequently but want to make fairly accessible(This 4' space behind screen won't have anything within 12-18" immediately behind screen) To allow for the pivoting motion, I plan on attaching a gate hinge (think chain link fence gate hinge) to EMT and wall. The hinge on the pivoting side will stick out about 2.75" from wall. Opposite side will use broom type clips to secure frame.
Screen: Based on my calculations, expecting the max visible screen area to be 10'W (11' garage width less frame, wall offset for pivot, space required for ball bungees to attach screen to frame on both sides). A 4:3 ratio would give me 7.5' height for visible area. I have the option to go a bit higher, but I do have a ceiling mounted furnace in the garage for the cold MN winters that will be behind the screen area (it comes in about 3' from the left wall as facing the screen). Guessing I could go up to another 1' of visible screen without impeding/putting screen in harms way of airflow from furnace. Looking at Carl's Place Premium or Poly Spacer from Spectrum golf.
Wall Padding: Plan on creating panels to affix to wall using plywood, 2" foam, and marine vinyl. The panels closest to the screen will be removable to allow the frame/screen to pivot and attached to wall via French cleat and will also provide protection for the vertical portion of frame. Other panels will use Beau Clip fasteners to attach to wall.
Over screen protection: Will have some sort of padded panels and/or net combo to catch anything above screen. Thinking about panels angled up towards ceiling attached to ceiling with cables or chain over right 7' feet of screen and on left having net to allow for furnace airflow. Over screen padded panels would allow for frame protection.
Launch monitor: I would like a launch monitor that is off of the floor for a cleaner look and like the option for right/left golfers. Looking at the Protee VX that would be attached to a slider to allow for movement for right/left golfers since I don't have the width for a fixed OH launch monitor to capture both right/left golfers.
Projector: Looking at the Benq AH700ST. Seems like a quality projector and one of the few options based on throw distance.
Computer: TBD … will have to get but thinking RTX 4070. Definitely an area I have to get better grip on. Location for computer also TBD. I have a decent size closet inside the house on opposite side of wall from garage that thinking about storing in to keep out of elements of garage (and honestly to keep out of way). There is also an outlet in the closet for power source, whereas limited outlets in garage. All I would think I would need to run is connection from launch monitor to computer through wall and maybe a wireless dongle of sorts for keyboard or golf simulator control board. Also, possibly run cords through wall for a smaller display for shot data (couldn't do large display/tv due to narrow width and potential for being hit by lefties).
Hitting strip: Planning on the EZ Tee Hybrid hitting strip. Planning on adding a little extra cushion underneath as that is what seems to be the biggest downfall of that hitting strip that I've read about.
Landing area/stance: Have a couple samples coming in (1/2 pile with 30-50oz face weight), won't be doing infill. Underneath landing area turf, will likely have foam board with gym tiles over. Stance area may be slightly different to provide a little extra cushion but will match up to height of hit strip/landing area surface. Wouldn't mind a lower price point here(especially landing area, shipping alone has been about $250 for the turf + averaging around $4/sq ft.)
Other: Will have acoustical sound panels on ceiling to hopefully absorb some (very minimal guessing) sound as well as provide darker space for ambient light absorption/non reflection.
Does the Protee VX launch monitor make sense in this situation (biggest issue being width but that is remedied by slider)? I've seen a couple of discussions of sliders being used in situations like this, but haven't seem a lot of how they were executed. Seems like attaching mounting bracket to linear rail slides. Any one seen more detailed execution of this?
7.5' of visible height does not seem like much to me. Does it make sense to go higher and take away from the 4:3 resolution? If opting for something more customized display this is just achieved through display settings on PC, correct? Any issues on display?
If I go with more than 7.5' of visible screen I would likely need to do a combo of padded panels and net for over screen protection. Thoughts on aesthetic appearance and functionality, should the over screen protection be combo of panels and net or just net? Screen would be primarily used for golf sim but at some point might throw a sporting event on it. Any issues you see with display?
Suggestions for turf for stance/landing area?
