Behind screen…?

I’m looking to squeeze the distance between my custom screen enclosure and the wall. What has everyone used to absorb the impact?
I'm thinking about hanging a piece of plush carpet behind the screen - has anyone ever done this?
any other good ideas?
is 8 inches doable? I have the space for 12 inches but want the most open space possible.

Foam mattress topper w/ tarp clips is a decent budget option. Haven't personally used but this is mentioned often enough for me to think it could fit the bill for your space.

Foam mattress topper is a solid budget shout. If you want another option to weigh up, a doubled-up quilted moving blanket (the kind movers use, cheap from Uline or Harbor Freight) is worth considering too, it packs flatter than foam so it's a bit easier to work with in a tighter gap like 8 inches, and it won't compress down over time the way foam can. Either way, hang it with grommets and a tension wire rather than nails so it stays taut and doesn't sag into your swing path. I had a net first behind the screen, and then added a super king memory foam mattress topper. I got extra large zip ties and hung it behind the bed. It stopped the ball travelling so far back, made it fall rather than bounce back… and also stopped a lot of the noise.
