  • MN Garage Golf Sim Build

Wanted to thank everyone on this forum for their contribution in completing a golf sim in my parents garage. My parents had just built a new house and my dad had full intention of purchasing a a new golf sim for it. After researching sites like TruGolf and FullSwing we realized pretty quickly that the total would be over $20k and we would still have to put everything together ourselves. I stumbled across this forum and quickly realized that this was something we could do on our own. I'm pretty good on the tech side of things and he is extremely handy with the construction so we made a good team. I was a bit nervous that it wouldn't turn out the way we wanted (especially since the old man was writing the checks) but it ended up being perfect. Thought I'd share some notes on what we did and would be happy to answer any questions as well.

Launch Monitor: GC2 refurbished from the Foresight website. I think this was the way to go given the warranty. It has worked great thus far.

Software: Perfect Golf. Absolutely love it. Very user friendly and we've already downloaded over 80 courses. Everything seems very accurate and the physics and graphics of the game are awesome. Zero complaints thus far. (Note I never have played TGC)

Impact Screen: Carl's Premium. The screen has been awesome. Very soft impact and the projector displays nicely on it. We currently have nothing behind the screen but the bounce back has been minimal.

Computer: CyberPower PC with a GTX 1060 6GB graphics card. Purchased the computer from Amazon and have had zero issues or glitches with PG.

Projector: Benq HT2150HT. Very simple to set up and use and the image is very clear. Currently projecting with a 4:3 ratio while the computer is in 16:9.

Monitor: Dell P2418HT. Purchased the monitor on Amazon and it works great for PG. I wouldn't say the touch screen definitely isn't a necessity but it certainly makes it easier.

Curtains: Peaks Tarps. Not extremely high quality but they definitely work and will stop the impact of the ball. Used this on one of the sides as well as on the ceiling. Our current ceiling protection is kind of sketchy as there is nothing above the curtain. My first swing with the driver I popped it straight up and the ball went right into the drywall. I think the plan is just to leave it as we're only hitting about 10' from the screen so it's not often that a ball hits the ceiling

Carpet Tiles: Menards. Very cheap and only on one side wall

Turf: Lowes unpadded putting turf. The turf is laying directly on the concrete which has been totally fine. It's more for looks rather than putting and it does a pretty good job at deadening the ball after hits the screen.

Mat: Truestrike. Works great and we use the Tomahawk tees with TeeClaws which work just as good as real tees.

If we were to do it again I don't think there would be much if anything I would do differently. Could have possibly figured out something a little better for the ceiling protection but I think we'll be able to make it work. I think all-in it was close to $11K with $5400 of that going into the GC2. Once again, thanks to everyone in this forum for your help. I spent many months on this site which made our set up very easy. I think we didn't even have a full day work into it before we were playing a full round which is incredible. Let me if you have any questions!

Nicely done. Fellow MN golfer here. You will love being able to play through these winters! I went w/ the refurb GC2 and Benq 2150 as well and I'm very happy w/ both.

Awesome build! Can you tell me the distance from the floor to your projector - hard to tell from the pictures. Ceiling height? Any concern with hitting the projector - it looks like it is mounted right above you? Also, how far back is your projector from the screen? Thanks.

It works great! Chipping takes a bit to get used to but you can tell it’s accurate. And I think the putting is a lot of fun. Just go up to the touchscreen and select where you’d like to aim and try to putt it as straight as possible. Was tough at first but now draining 15’ putts is becoming more common

Ceilings are 10’ so floor to projector is probably 9’6”. Screen is 12’ wide which meant that the projector needed to be mounted atleast 12’ away which is where we put it. The calculator on projectorcentral.com is pretty simple to use. The Benq does have a zoom so it doesn’t need to be absolutely perfect when initially mounted. We are hitting 10’ away so to hit the projector would be pretty much impossible on a backswing. The concern is if somebody decides to celebrate a shot and put there club in the air.. we’ve discussed putting some protective cage around it to protect from that

Thanks for the feedback! Can you tell me how tall your screen is from floor to to edge. Just curious to see if you needed to mount the injector at the same height as the top of your screen or could you hang the projector at a higher height and then angle it down a bit towards the screen. My concern is the position of the projector in relation to the golf swing. I want it high and out of the way but not too far back that it causes shadows. Thanks again and enjoy your new build!

Meant to ask how tall your screen is from the floor to the top edge. Also, it is a projector, not an injector! Lol

Nice setup! Had to put mine in the garage since basement only 8’ ceiling and make it movable to put big truck in. I can’t complaign though since I got a real nice man cave and a garage sim! Putting together would have been great though! Looks real cozy!
