    "Clown's Mouth" Simulator Rebuild

Two years ago I started into the golf simulator world with an Optishot 2 simulator. I wanted to get better at golf, and a simulator at home seemed like a great way to improve. I also got a Net Return and built a stance platform that the Optishot fit into.

My biggest problem (at that time) was topping the ball. Since the Optishot only reads the club, there would be plenty of topped shots that the simulator showed as amazing hits 200+ yards down the fairway. Of course, this was basically pointless. My son was 14, and he started playing golf for the first time, but he had lots of contact issues as well, so I decided the Optishot just wasn't going to cut it.

I ended up finding this forum, and aeroburner got us set up with a GC2 and TGC. I got a nice mat from a driving range that had recently shut down, and picked up a Benq1085ST projector on craigslist. I added a $20 bed sheet from Ross and our upgraded simulator setup was up and running. The real feedback of what the ball was actually doing was a huge improvement over our previous setup. My son joined the high school golf team last year, and got better and better - he almost always beats me now.

We have now gotten to the point where we need to upgrade again. Now we're ready to build a real screen. The current screen is like hitting it into the clown's mouth at a miniature golf course!

So far I have ordered the new SQ impact screen material from par2pro.com and I'm researching the frame build. I'll post more photos as we go, but I figured putting up this post would encourage me to get it done quicker than if nobody was watching!

    Here's our "before" photo!

I have 10 ft ceilings in my garage, but we do have to maneuver around the garage door opener track and two storage racks hung from the ceiling. I think it's going to be difficult to get the projector setup without any shadow from the garage door opener.
