  • Building level stance mat on a slope

    Hey guys,

Wondering if anyone has attempted to build their hitting bay on a slope? I have a perfect spot behind my house for a cool outdoor sim setup, but the problem is that the area has a non-trivial slope to it. I have yet to measure the exact degrees of the slope, but it looks to go down about 8-10 inches over 10 feet. The surface is concrete, so I doubt I will want to go down the road of trying to level the concrete itself.

My thoughts are to build a "stance box" that can counter the slope to provide a level hitting area. Anybody have some recommendations?

I figure I could do it just slapping some 2x4's and plywood together, but I am certainly not a professional.

I did a quick search for a pre-built "stance box" (sorry, have no idea what to call it) and didn't find much. I like the idea of something that is pre-built so that I could just add some sort of spacers/shims to make it level.

Some ideas would be greatly appreciated.

After some more thought, I figure the easiest route to go is build a frame and put some twist leveling feet on each corner. I think those would be durable enough, and hopefully won't result in any sliding around. Or will they?

So my main concern is what to use for the top of the platform. Would plywood be durable enough? Or would that quickly warp do to the weight of the golfer standing on it + the impact of the club hitting it?

I could reinforce the frame with more 2x4's, but either way the plywood (or whatever I use) will be stressed.

    Thoughts?

Fill with sand or gravel, top with plywood

This is a really good idea. Only drawback is I would like to be able to move the mat now and then, and this would make it very difficult.

        Appreciate the thought, though!

You could just go to your local Home Dept or Menards if your in the US. Get a instant floor leveller. What size space are you talking.
10x? I know you say don’t want to level the cement itself. But to be honest. 100-150 bucks or cheaper u could level that slab. I’d just go take a few pics and go ask someone there. Doesn’t have to be with concrete. Plentipatch or something similar will work. Mix it up, pour it on, and level it with a trowel. Just take a few pieces of scrap wood around the sides of it so it doesn’t run off.
24 hours it sets and then you just can lay your mat or outdoor carpet right on the slab 👍🏻

It's hard to describe without a photo, but I can't level the cement for two reasons:

        1. It's where water drains. So if I level it I will have to deal with a pool of water every time it rains.

        2. There is a door right where I would need to place cement. This would create some issues such as a potentially hazardous step to walk in/out.

But thanks for taking the time to give me your input!

      No problem!
Well in the case if it’s something you need to move.
Your gonna need to build a box. Say you can get the right angle say 8 or 9 degrees.
Just get 1x2 or 2x3 pine at the lumber store.
If you have access to a table saw then just set it to the right degree and cut the pine in half so you get the right angle. Those would be your side pieces.
Then cur two other side pieces.
Put a piece of plywood on top.
Make it whatever size ya want.
But it will need bracing on the inside so it doesn’t sag with your on it.
Or get like 3/4 or 1 inch plywood it won’t sag much.
To be honest if ya can draw up kind of what ya want. Someone at the store can show ya what ya need lol
I find it hard to explain in message.
      But good luck. 👍🏻

I just built this with pine and a piece of plywood to set my mats in so it doesn’t move around.
You could really just shim the front it’s kind of level
