  • Another Theater/Golf Sim Build

After reading many posts and getting a ton of info on these forums, my build is 95% of the way done. I wanted to show off the build and share any knowledge that I might have learned throughout teh process. Warning: My photo taking ability sucks, I need to learn how to stage and get the right lighting.

So on to my build. We recently renovated and added on to our house. From the get go I knew I wanted to have enough space for a golf/theater room. The room is 29' feet long with 13' foot width in the golf sim area. The width where the bar is located is 20'. The ceiling is 10' aside from on the edges where we dropped them 12" to accommodate the roof trusses on one edge. We built out the room with the drop on the edges to make it look uniform and complete. The hitting area is a 7'6" from the impact screen. This is a second floor room that is above our master. We did resilient channel and insulation rockwool on all walls and floor as well as boxes around the recessed lighting in the master bedroom. When I hit balls the only noise that you can hear sometimes is a bouncer on a wedge shot, but it is a light thump.

I went with a two projector setup. An Epson 5040UB for the cinema projector that projects onto 150" motorized screen. I have the Optima 1080 Darbee for the golf projector. The impact screen is on a heavy duty curtain track and attaches to each side of the wall with angle iron and bungees. For the side that disconnects when not in use I use ball bungees. I need to tinker with the screen tightness to improve the golf sim picture, but I only notice it when I took the pictures. To protect the ceiling I used 2" thick rubber foam. ( If I had to do it again I would not have went as crazy on ceiling protection. I have only been able to hit the ceiling with flop shots) For the hitting Matt I originally had the Truestrike, but I found the surface unforgiving. I now use the Truestrike stance mat with the Fiberbuilt hitting strip. For the simulator I have the GC2 and HMT.

For the electronics I have all of them in the climate controlled closet that is left of the hitting area. This room houses my tgc/media server, my modem, router and switches, security system, security camera server, Xbox, cable box, and home automation controllers. These are all on there own 20 AMP circuit that I have a battery backup for the minute it takes the backup generator to turn on in a power outage. All of this is controlled by my home automation system that is throughout the house. For anyone interested I have a few different controllers that I tie together with a front end GUI called simple control.

The other addition I added was the bar area. For the bar I wanted to have an easily maintainable and clean space, so we did a dishwasher and under-counter fridge/freezer. I put a tv over the bar area so that I can have something on in the background when hitting balls. The few times hat we have hosted parties it always ends with the guys playing golf while having some sport on in the background for when its not your turn.

A few things I wish I did differently and might change in the future
    1. Less ceiling protection.
    2. Motorized shades
    3. Custom cabinetry and better finishes in the room that is in line with the rest of the house. (I gave our interior designer a budget and she did a wonderful job with what I gave her, but I was conservative to make sure the rest of the house was finished perfectly. I was a bit too conservative and could have finished the room better.
    4. Redo the stance mat and put in a putting area
    5. Built in club storage

Right now, I am just enjoying getting to use it when I have free time.

    Very nice room.
What is the reason for keeping the movie screen behind the golf screen, protection?
I can see you spending lots of time in that area of the house :-)

Looks nice. I am in the beginning process of putting something together. Hope it might be as nice as yours!

        Thanks. Guys.

To answer your questions. The back screen is motorized so when I’m not using the room that goes up and the blinds go up as well(planning to motorized the blinds). The other reason is that the thick impact screen would muffle the sound during movies. I did spend some time calculating the angles/speaker distance and did the Dolby atmos system which I have really enjoyed when watching a UHD Blu-ray that has an atmos track.

There are movie theater screens designed for speakers to be behind them, but they would not do well with a golf ball traveling 150 mph.
