Initial steps for garage sim build retaining full use as garage for 2 cars.
Original plan: retractable enclosure 11’W x 9’H x 2’ D.
Current plan: Permanent EMT enclosure with Canopy for ceiling protection & side curtains. Key measurements: Total W 169”, H to ceiling 127.5”, H to ceiling beam 117.5”, D 300”. The side curtains will be outside the EMT frame and Canopy and I am allowing 10” (5” aside) for the stack back of the curtains when not in use. The EMT frame will be 1” conduit and will be 159” W x 112” H X 10/12” D. The hitting wall has a curb that is 4.5” D & 6” H.
The hitting wall is drywalled & I plan to add ½” plywood over the entire width from the curb up to the beam. I plan to set the EMT frame on plywood and secure it to floor & some blocking attached to the hitting wall studs. The curb will be fronted with neoprene although I am not expecting any balls to make it to the curb.
Still designing final dimensions for the canopy, but it will be the same width as EMT frame and 76/96” deep x 4”H. It will be attached to the hitting wall and cabled to the ceiling trusses. Plan is to wrap the entire canopy with commando cloth or cordura and am considering sandwiching acousitical foam. Working on designs for baffle or wedge for the front of canopy to direct balls forward & downward toward the screen.
EMT frame will be wrapped in netting, sides, top and rear and come over top of projection screen & attach to canopy. Projection screen on front frame of EMT & backing of archery netting or covered latex toppers. Hitting area about 11’ from screen, projector in general vicinity depending on final aspect ratio.
Side drapes will be floor to ceiling on track. Both side curtains will be attached to either rear of EMT or hitting wall. Left side will probably offer 60” of protection from screen towards teeing area & right side 72”.
Plan to have turf with sub material about 14’W x 8’ deep. This will be permanent and I will park on part of it. Hitting mat will be separate, but will adjoin the large turf.
Phase 1 began this week: Relocation of mini split; separating daisy chained 3 ceiling light arrangement to 2 separate switched ceiling lights and addition of ceiling outlet for projector. Net result, removal of ceiling light in hitting zone, addition of dimmable track light for use during sim play, brighter led fixture for workbench & shelving area.
Added outlet for use with jackshaft garage door opener, ordered 2 jackshaft garage door openers, also shortening remaining door rails by 10”, this adds 3’ of width and improves spacing at tee area for driver follow thru. Ordered sample of side drape material. Next step is to order side drapes as this will dictate EMT frame size. Hoping to complete by March 1.
Tested out some projections today & got 150” x 84” @ 16:9: 144” x 108” @ 4:3. 16:10 should give me 150” x 94” but I don’t know how to make that happen.
