  • New golf sim build in garage (Trusses + flooring)

Hi first time messenging, been lurking for a while and been having a good read up and looking at your great sim builds. I am in the UK and have bought a brand new house that comes with a detached garage (see pics). i have 12ft width 22ft long and 9.7 ft height. My main concern is the height, its enough to swing an iron but i want to be able to swing driver.

So my preferred option is to cut and raise the the trusseses, about a foot? Is this ok to do? The roof is angled at 35 degrees and the garage is made up of bricks.

Also the flooring is concrete, what do you suggest i put down above it? i dont want anythin to thick so i dont have a lot of room but i am weary something good must be put down so i dont injure wrists etc.

    thanks I appreciate your help.

    Jon

9.7 ft ceiling should be tall enough for your driver swing unless you are tall. I am 5'11" and I can swing my driver in my basement that's 8'10" high, but I do hit the ceiling once in a while. I wish mine was 9.5 ft and it should be enough to swing any clubs in the bag.

Hi gimer123 not sure how to word this correctly but are you sure that your garage is 12ft in width which is roughly 3.6m wide as going from your photos it don’t look that wide and by counting the black line of bricks I’m getting it to roughly 2.7m 8.8ft,Also it looks like you have beems on either side of garage that makes your hitting zone smaller again, hope im wrong just thought I’d mention something b4 you spend any money cheers

        Hi Gilmer,

        Tricky.

The truss is obviously designed as a unit, with the horizontal chords ‘tieing’ the roof together. Without the chords, the diagonal rafters would try to push the walls outwards.

I can’t see any tension webs, so the timbers might be relatively chunky, giving you options. It might be possible to raise the chords/ties, but to do it properly you’d need a structural engineer or trussed rafter company to check the calcs.

        Hope that helps.

        Danny

Hi rovers - yeah sorry it’s not 12 ft it’s 2.8m/2,9m so about 9ft....is this going to be an issue then?

Hi Danny thanks for the reply - I have a builder friend and I know a few structural engineers so I ask them this week. But I like what your saying, it seems potentially achievable.

I have the garage/floor and roof calcs to hand - should I send through?!

Hi gilmer123 you maybe able to make it work but just to show you on my pics my garage is 3.4m wide and I’ve got roughly 1m to the right of space left so with your width your hitting area with driver/woods is going to be close to the wall

                Hi Rovers,

i am not to worried about width i have been in the garage a fews time and have had a swing with driver there is plenty of room, i bring it through a bit more upright on follow through.

hopefully can modify trusses without too much problems and also flooring wise find a flooring that will be safe from injuring wrists etc....

Yeah I am looking forward to it, most of the work will be done between me and a builder friend once I move into the house. How did you go about the flooring in your garage?

I’ve got a protee system which is camara sensor system built into a fibre mat what you can see on the photos,so cut the hole out the concrete to drop the mat into the gap then laid plywood across the whole concrete floor then brought some artificial grass from online to surround the garage to tidy it up,which I glued to the wood but I don’t need any sort of hitting mat as mine is built into my system

Hi Rovers - where did you get your turf from? I am going to latex the concrete flooring and then lay carpet tiles down as the front of garage will be a gym. Then where the golf mat is I want to lay some turf down so the ball doesnt bounce.
