  • Winnipeg Garage Simulator Build

    Hello Community,

I am in the midst of redoing my garage based simulator. I have a few general question today, but hope to use this thread to get feedback organize my thoughts. The first statement is that I have only basic woodworking skills (I have a chop saw). Do you think the community here is strong enough/willing to help me with the build given my limited skill set? I have two weeks off next month and this will be the main project. I also know a carpenter who I could hire to help...he's a golfer....

I essentially want to build a fixed/permanent enclosure to replace my net return pro.

The build will be based around a 12ft wide and 10ft deep fibrebuilt combined centre hitting and putting mat (see pic). I essentially want to enclose the mat. The enclosure build will have no side wall support for the framing, just the back wall and ceiling. Im also planning for the simulator to have curtain side wall hangin from the ceiling and would like to add some material to the inside top of the enclosure.

Here is what I’m thinking so far: since my size is 10 ft ceiling and 12 feet wide the standard aspect ratio that is closest is 4:3. Thus the “functional area of the sim would be 9 feet high and 12 feet wide.

    1. Framing: for the width I need to account for the angle iron size and about an inch for the bungee installation…Question: if I add about 5 inches from the inside of the frame would this be enough to install the impact screen? Thus, for width I would add about 10 inches to the inside Frame diameter (5 inches per side) and for height just add 5 inches since the bottom will be floating?

I'll start here and add a few pics.

    Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Hi, I’m also in the Winnipeg area and starting a build in my basement. I was just curious where your turf was from. I was hoping to put a putting green in front of mine but still unsure on best sources shipping to Canada. Par2Pro has been good but limited selection for turf.

Thanks! Where about did you order from in Canada? As for your enclosure, I would say I’m handy but not an expert. Basic framing and walls is very simple work with limited tools required. A little Patience and willingness to ask the ‘dumb’ questions at a good hardware store with knowledgeable staff (home hardware Windsor). When in doubt YouTube. Hope it turns out great for you!

So you want to build walls to enclose the area but the area is only 10 feet deep and 12 feet wide? That's an awfully tight space to have enclosed. 12 feet wide would likely force you to be offset and I can't imagine only 10 feet of depth would work at all.

(or maybe I'm just misinterpreting what you're saying)

Edit: After reading your post again, I'm guessing you mean that the turf area is 12x10 but the enclosure itself will be much bigger.

I did something similar in my garage. I built walls using 2x4's and dry wall. And I too have only very limited DIY skills. It really wasn't difficult. Just attached several 2x4's to make a frame and then nailed up the drywall. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

Mine is about 13 feet wide and about 15 feet deep. I'm able to use the outside of the walls to hang tools and what not as part of the rest of the garage. Building the walls was a good way of separating the simulator from the rest of the garage and making it it's own dedicated space.

I did not go all the way up to the ceiling. The walls for my simulator "room" are only 8 feet tall and the garage ceiling is 12 feet. So there's 4 feet of space between the top of my walls and the ceiling. That's good because it allows for some air to circulate (as much as air can circulate in a garage anyway) and allow the garage light into the simulator space.

It also allowed me to "man-cave" the simulator room and hang pictures and flags and what not in there to make it a cooler hangout space (something I couldn't really do before when I just had up tarp.

What dimensions do you think the enclosure will be?

Thanks for the comments so far. My putting green stance mat is 10 feet wide and 14 feet deep (I made an error in my initially post). I can't enclosure it completely because it is not wide enough....that is why I was thinking to enclose only seven feet (would help catch mis hits and skied shots). 3on3 do you have any pics...I really was encouraged by your post.

Lifeon the fringe....I was under the impression that fib rebuilt was based out of Alberta. I'll pm you my contact...shipping was very straight forward.

Some pics of my walls ....

The 2x4s I got came in 8 foot lengths and the drywal sections are 4 feet wide by 8 feet tall. If you only built out 8 feet on the sides you wouldn't have to make a single cut. Just use one 2x4 on the bottom, one on top, and three going vertical.
