  • How do we deal with garage door tracks and opener

We broke ground last week on a 24x24x10 pole barn that’s “meant for storage! I swear!”.

This is plenty of room for the sim, a couch, my lawnmower, folded ping pong table and other random items that don’t fit in my basement or my shed.

my biggest concern all of a sudden is the garage door track and opener. I went with a 7’hx12’w garage door.

I have some lefties that couldn’t play in my last garage Because of this so curious if people here have done anything special with their garage door track and opener.

I know they do side mount openers but they are expensive. Even with that in mind, it’s still doable but doesn’t help the track issue which I assume will extend at least 10’ into the garage.

Any thoughts or photos combatting this nuisance?

For mine, my tracks follow the roof line, so they are up and out of the way

Do you have like an A Frame? Or scissor trusses? I’m envisioning they are at an angle upwards?

Best option is a jack lift

Yeah, this definitely solves the center mounted tracking. This plus what sounds like a “high lift” kit is the best combo.

House was built in 49 and it only has rafter ties about 2’ down from the peak. High lift tracks are another option to get them up as high as possible

You could go with these. They don’t have tracks or opener mechanisms on the ceilings. https://www.smartgarage.ca/residential-door/gallery/

That’s pretty smart!! Never would have thought of this.

I had a high lift installed, the tracks go straight up and then follow the garage ceiling. was only about 400 dollars.

That’s a good deal if they are redoing tracks. I would say the higher the better for sure. 10’ should be great. I did a high lift as well on 10’ ceilings, but the track is closer to 9’.

If you have 10’ ceilings your tracks will not be at 10’.

400 seems like a lot but 750 is a good deal? calebm1001, what are you smoking and can you share?

yeah, there is a guy that was just quoted $1,500 About two comments above... that seems like a lot. What are you smoking that stops you from reading the other comments? That’s what I’m replying to if you read in chronological order.

I’m also not sure what the guy with the $750 quote is talking about now. You can’t use a center lift system with a high rise track system. I must have assumed at the time they were including a jack mount lift in that quote.

Lots of great idea here guys! Thank you so much.

the door was already ordered so the best option is the side mount jack lift and high lift kit. Luckily, a manual garage door works just fine so I can invest in the high lift right away.

Gotta ask what is the cost for a pole barn of that size? I've been considering building one at my house but the wife is not sold.

SkeetShooter too much but I’m the type that puts money into things that create value. I’m not going to lose money on a nice pole barn so I was more than happy to build something that would hold a lot of overflow things my garage simply couldn’t handle.

If you want to do it right - electricity, insulated and finished interior, steal siding, high life doors, cement, gutters etc, $18-23k

I put in a side lift and another benefit is how incredibly quiet it is. It also comes with an additional lock on the garage which enhances security.

I had an issue with my garage door opener, I clipped it on follow through with woods and long irons. I bought a sommer direct drive opener and the adapter that allows you to mount main body of opener on ceiling. It’s also the quietest opener ever.
