  • Garage simulator - Width needed

I am just starting down the road of researching what it will take to build a simulator in my garage. I have 10' ceilings out there do it should be just fine. My concern is the width. I am left handed and the rest of the family is right handed. So I will regularly be switching between left and right handed.
Right now the space I am planning for is about 10' wide. Is that wide enough to have a mat set up with the hitting area in the center and easily hit from both sides. Looking at it, it just feel kind of cramped.

Hi goingup4m . I'm sure you'll get great answers from users more qualified than I. Unfortunately I think they are going to tell you 10' wide is probably not enough to accommodate lefties and righties without some significant maneuvering. It's more likely you will need 14' or more for a permanent set up. In any case, even if you set it up for just you, 10' will not have you in the middle. You will be offset by as much as a couple of feet.

I have 13' and I'm offset by about 6" - 1' (6'2" tall). You need about 7' minimum behind you for what I think is the average swing.

Sorry to bring the bad news.

I also am a Garage sim golfer and I am running just over 10 feet at my width, and I won't even entertain the possibilty of a lefty playing in my garage. It just won't happen.

Great, thanks guys, I may have to rethink how I am going to set this up, or just tell the righties they are out of luck.... ha ha

I have a couple of follow up questions. When setting up your screen and matt how important is it for the hitting spot to be centered on the screen if you are projecting to the screen? It seems to me that you would really want to be set up in the center

If I could hit the center, I would hit from the center but I wouldn’t left a little offset stop me from playing.

If you can somehow get at least 12’ you should highly consider it. At 10’ wide, you’re going to be offset and be hitting at roughly 2-3’ from the edge of the screen.

Also, most launch monitors have an offset feature. I think it’s just more aesthetically pleasing and maybe feels a little more realistic to hit the middle but not a requirement. What LM are you considering?

not important at all for your hitting spot to be in the center... im not. I'm probably 2.5 feet to my right of center for my setup.

Agreed. This isn’t important as long as you’re hitting the screen. My mat is centered, but I end up hitting right of center since my skytrak sits off the right side of my mat (there for the ball is hit off the right side).

Great. I am looking at using a skytrack launch monitor.
