  • New Build questions

Good evening, all. My apologies in advance as I know all the info is here, but I have a tough time navigating and saving the ideas I like from all your amazing sim builds.

Im currently having a home built and put it on top of a 12’ ceiling basement solely for the purpose of having all the room I need for a golf simulator. The available area I’ll have is 20’ x 28’ with 11’9” to the floor joists.

my wish is to have this room to be a dual purpose home theater/golf sim. I believe I’m sold on the uneekor sims and I’d like to turf the entire room to allow for putting all around the room.

    My initial questions are:
    1) What is the consensus best turf to cover the entire area and allow for a replaceable “hitting area”? And what turf is best for the teeing/striking area.

    2) What are some good solutions for surround sound and how do I keep it safe from golf balls?

    3) Where should I place my lighting in the immediate to sim area, and what type lighting is best.

Again, I apologize for asking this stuff in a new thread, but I’d also be interested in seeking out design plans if anyone does something like that for pay. I’ve got a blank canvas and would like to get this done right and nicely the first time.

QED Uneekor is a very good choice, and as far as turf I don't have a recommendation but I can tell you not to do like me and buy the on-sell stuff.
Surround-a-sound I use the Vizio SmartCast 5.1 Channel Sound Bar System and as you can see from my picture (circled on the bar arrow points to wiring) I have it mounted above the screen pointing slightly down and behind the netting.
Lighting, I have a recessed 100 watt dimmable LED right over the hitting area and then track lights to each side also LED dimmable.

My room is all southwest green putting turf with a CCE hitting mat that’s 5x10. The Mat is on the ground and the turf is shimmed with Dricore.

Sounds like you are going to have an awesome build, good luck... In regards to your questions.

        1. I think most of the stance mat turf is pretty similar. I remember when I spoke to Par2Pro during my build he indicated that most of the turf companies had consolidated over the last few years and almost all turf was being manufactured by synthetic turf international at the same plant in Dalton Georgia... However, I am huge proponent of Fiberbuilt when it comes to the actual hitting area.

        2. I used in ceiling speakers for my install... Not sure where you are in your home build, but if you can get the AV company you work with to add them during the low voltage install it's actually pretty affordable... I put the speakers 7' off the sim wall so that they would not be covered by any ceiling protection. I also had them obviously run conduit to where I have my projector for HDMI... I used a Denon 2500 receiver for my surround sound which allows me to plug in several inputs (firestick, Apple TV, PC) so it's easier to just a new device into the receiver that switches the inputs obviously to my projector... Added pictures below...

        3. I used can lights for my lighting and put the lights by the sim and hitting area on a different zone than the other can lights in the room... I put both zones on dimmers... I end up dimming the sim area a little and keep the rest of the lights all the way up while playing...

In the first pic you can see my in ceiling speakers... I use my area as a gym as well so I went with rubber gym flooring instead of the turf

Nice setup. What is the strip between the hitting area and the screen? I assume you got it for putting.

Update on the build. House is finally finished and I'm getting to work on the basement simulator. I've been painting the block in the room in sections with DRYLOCK and using Dricore squares for the sub floor. I ordered a Fiberbuilt 9' x 4' Studio Golf Mat for the hitting area, and have Turf Factory Direct Putting Elite turf on the way to carpet the room. The screen is a 16' x 10' premium impact from Carl's Place.

Has anyone used one of the fiber built mats and gotten their other turf to match up to it seamlessly? My other turf is being delivered Tuesday and I’m still scratching my head on how to get it to work with the hitting mat.

I purchased the combo mat as my solution. I realize that you have already received the stance/hitting mat but if you call them maybe they can work out a solution for you. For the combo mat the rubber base extends across the entire surface and the height is adjusted so it is a flat surface. I am very happy with both the hitting area as well and the ability to work chipping and putting in the same area.
