Hello Everyone,
My name is Corey and I am a PGA Club Professional new to the forum. I just completed my very first build in order to have a place to teach in the winter, for friends/family to enjoy and to work on my game in the offseason (or a peaceful place away from my club in the summer).
In my first post on the forum I was asking for feedback on how to make my setup portable so my wife could still park in the garage:
Originally I was debating on building the enclosure on casters and sliding it back and forth to allow room for my wife’s vehicle or installing a wench and building a folding platform to hit off of. Instead (with the help of a creative buddy of mine), we began to throw the idea around of not doing anything drastic, just moving the hitting mat every time. Problem was, How do you do that and have the ability to have a solid run of turf to be able to putt? And I knew I wanted it dead center of the garage to avoid the garage door tracks and lift so lefties and righties could play. Well, we decided on interlocking mats with turf attached to it. Ended up being a very easy and stress-free solution as opposed to building something heavy that we could move.
Here is what I have with measurements...
Garage is 22’ wide x 24’ long (needed to maintain storage area, workbench, zero turn storage, tons of junk and ability for wife to park in the garage)
- SkyTrak ($1500)
- Optoma 1080 GT Darbee Short Throw Projector (4:3 ratio) ($650)
- Acer Aspire 7 Gaming Laptop ($850)
- Carl’s enclosure (10.5’ W x 8’ H x 5’ D) with preferred screen (haven’t put anything else behind screen yet (tarp, blanket or anything) ($800)
- Ten 10’ (1”) EMT pipe from Lowe’s ($100)
- Hitting Strip is 10” W x 30” L Real Feel Country Club Elite ($60)
- 24” interlocking gym mats from Sam’s Club ($150)
- 8x6 rolls of basic outdoor turf (Lowe’s) ($20 each)
All in all, about $4k total which I wanted to stay under $5k.
We super glued the mats together (used two layers of .53” mats) and then used carpet adhesive to glue the turf to the mats. This is how we built the landing pad, putting strip and hitting mat. Trimmed everything out and then glued the mat trim connectors to the front of the hitting mat and front of the landing pad to connect the putting strip. We cut out for the insert and slid it into the hitting mat (not quite flush, but close). I’ll just use a 2’ x 8’ strip of extra turf and run it from the front of the hitting strip to the landing pad when playing to make putting smoother.
I have attached photos of the progress from beginning to end.
It’s not going to win any awards, but it serves its purpose and is solid for a multi-purpose area like my garage.
I hope this helps someone out in constructing their sim. I know I was lost just a week ago!
PS- If anyone can give me a recommendation on E6 vs TGC2019 I would appreciate it! I was set on TGC2019 until I saw some negative reviews on here about a glitch involving balls bouncing straight up in the air.
