Initial problem - Wife refuses to give up half of our 2-car garage for a toy!? I guess I can't blame her, and reminding her that I would have installed it in the finished basement were it not for the 8' 6"

ceilings got me no sympathy.

Solution - Modify Carl's Screen and Enclosure to allow hinging of the the side panels, which reduces the resting footprint of the enclosure down to 1 x 8 feet.

I was thinking of that, but it doesn't look like it would fold completely, it seems it would not close to a perfect 90 degree. I was going to use the 2 way, about 6" to 1' out so when folded, it would have some base to stay up on it's own. Like the OP it would be about 1' away from the wall at most. Only thing I would change is add 2 more hinges to the top bar, that way you just disconnect in the middle and drop the center bars down.

So I ordered the PVC style, which seems pretty sturdy so far and think what I put together should work. I picked up 3/4" PVC sleeve that fits perfectly into the PVC hinge, but the 1"EMT is too thick for the 3/4" sleeve. What I did was use my heat gun to warm up the PVC and slowly insert the 1" EMT until the PVC expanded enough to slip over the EMT. I plan on cement from PVC to PVC, but use construction adhesive when mating the PVC to EMT. If that doesn't work I'll use #10 bolt/but combo to hold them together.

I also bought some wingnuts for the hinge, this way I can notch a broom handle to turn the wing nut and loosen it enough to tighten and untighten the wingnut to swing the hinge open and closed. Since these will be about 9' high.

Would this work if you wanted a longer side enclosure? With a 10ft wide screen, how would I make it fold together if I wanted something like a 7ft deep enclosure? Just install the joints 2ft out on the side enclosure pipes so you had two 5ft sections folding together? Any other ideas?
