  • My El Cheapo Garage Setup for under $550

Hey all. New here to the forums but looking to get more ideas and expand my sim horizons. This is my first attempt and just trying to weather the corona. I decided I wanted to put something together in the garage. I didn't want to break the bank at all. Still waiting on a jagmanjoe turf top and looking to build out a better mat.

Thanks for posting. I had a similar set up years ago when I first entered the sim world. I have since upgraded. Sims built with unlimited budgets are great but it is always interesting to see what guys can achieve with limited budgets. Enjoy it.

You might want to consider adding some foam tiles under your stance mat to bring it up to the same level as your opti, you will definitely need it when the jagman cover comes as it's much thicker.

BTW, you in MI, I saw the Rocket Mortgage sign. Looks like they are doing it over 4th of July this year.

Yeah, Hopefully we'll actually be able to celebrate our freedom this 4th of July. It'll be nice if we can get out there. I enjoyed myself last year at it.

If I read it correctly the first four pga tournaments will be without fans. Sure enough the rocket is fourth and I got tickets for Xmas. Would be nice to go back this year but it’s not looking promising.

Thanks!! Yeah, I told myself don't break the bank especially with everything going on in the world and if I find myself using it enough then down the road I can upgrade to some big boy toys....lol

That’s awesome. If you don’t mind me asking what grass did you use for your upgrade? What’s the sq footage and how much did it run you!!!

The "grass" is Unique Loom Solo Solid Shag Collection Modern Plush Grass Green Area Rug (5' 0 x 8' 0) AMAZON comes in many sizes (i just modified a couple to fit the room. The sim is on second floor of my barn. That room is larger than the pic shows, there is a couch and other things on the other side.
Basically the screen is 10 feet wide by 8 feet high. My projector is 10 feet high and 7.5 feet from screen. The actual ceiling is over 15 feet high and the length of the room is over 20 feet.

Hitting mat is All Turf Mats 48" X 60" XL Super Tee Golf Mat - Holds Any Size Wooden Tee AMAZON with a fiberbuilt hitting strip within it, but honestly I feel the original mat I inset the fiberbuilt strip is more realistic than fiberbuilt to real life.

I kind of chuckled when I saw you have an actual ball bucket - I made fun of my brother when he bought his Skytrak before me, and I noticed he was using a large plastic "salad" bowl for balls. I happened to have a similar plastic bowl available to use and it's perfect - the angle of the side of the bowl is perfect for just scooping balls out of with my irons. :P

Cool. I'm looking at just grabbing a cheap driving net off Amazon for now until I see exactly where in the garage I'll more permanently set up the sim and whether I'm going to go with a screen or keep the TV setup, since I have two I'm not using. I can always take the net to the cottage later when I replace it.

No issues with wear or a driver pounding a hole through it so far?

I thought of buying the Optishot just for hitting foam balls. Been using them in my net for the last 15 years. Only needed 1 real golf to go through the net to switch. I’ m Leaning towards SkyTrak for my simulator of I can ever get one. Went to the U.S. Open at Oakland Hills in 1996.

The mortgage classic @ Detroit Golf Club was my first PGA event.

I used to be almost 600lbs and then lost a bunch of weight and fell in love with the game about 2 years ago. Since then I can't get enough of golf. So I'll take it any way I can. Hoping they allow fans in July when it's here because I would love to go again. it's a wait and see but I'm hopeful.

No fans. Just got the email from them and they give you four options for the tickets you purchased. Donate 100%, Donate 50%, Credit for 2021 Event or Refund.
Sucks because it's nice having a tournament so close to home.
