Is side netting necessary?

I'm deciding between the HomeCourse or Par2Pro Stealth. I'm leaning towards the stealth due to the heavier screen which will seems to lend itself to less draping and better image quality.

I am installing in a three car garage, with one side of the bay being the side wall of the garage and the other side open to the rest of the garage.

Is side netting really necessary? is it just to protect from shanks or is it more for directing the rebounds off the screen back towards the center so you aren't having to collect balls from all over? If it's just for shanks...being a right handed golfer I was thinking of just using a traverse curtain rod and curtain to the open side of the garage and the chance of hooking something so hard left as to miss the screen would seem impossible.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I am not familiar with the options you are considering but I have the Net Returns and also debated on whether or not the side barriers were necessary. I ended up getting them just in case and I am sure glad that I did because they have saved me a few times from a bad case of the shanks.

It depends a little on what that side wall is. If it's concrete or brick, you're in dangerous territory if a shank comes bouncing off of that and back at your head. It doesn't have to necessarily be netting. Just some foam padding to deaden the blow will do the trick.
