  • Width of Impact Screen Vs Distance to Tee

    Hi guys,

I was hoping for some opinions on choosing the optimum impact screen width and distance of the screen to the tee based on my room dimensions.

The dimensions of my room are quite odd so I will have to make some compromises unfortunately (see attached sketch).

The room is approx.. 11 ft at one end and tapers off to 7 ft at the narrow end. The room is approx. 21.6 ft long. The room is 8.53 ft high.

I have measured it out and I can comfortably swing a driver and miss the wall behind and miss the ceiling (mat location shown on sketch).

I have four options for distance of impact screen to tee.
    1. Impact screen 7.87 ft wide @ 7.48 ft to tee
    2. Impact screen 8.20 ft wide @ 7.15 ft to tee
    3. Impact screen 8.39 ft wide @ 6.85 ft to tee
    4. Impact screen 9.00 ft wide @ 6.00 ft to tee
My question is, in your opinion would it be better to have a wider impact screen and be closer to the tee, or be further away but have a narrower screen. I am trying to optimise this relationship and get the balance right. Ideally I would like the widest screen possible, but not sure what the minimum distance is from tee to screen before it either becomes dangerous or you are too close to the screen that it loses its perspective.

What would you guys do in my situation (obviously I cant knock down the room and build to the perfect dimensions)?

    Cheers

My vote would be option #2-3.

Option #4 puts you at only 6 feet away, which is a bit close. You figure your driver is probably 44 inches long, which is more than 3.5 feet. And when your arms are extended out in the follow through that adds another 1.5 feet or so. That puts you at roughly 5 feet. Factor in some body turn towards the target and you could be awfully close to nipping that screen with your driver on the follow through.

If you are 7 feet from the screen, you should have a screen width of around 99 inches. In a 4:3 aspect ratio, your image could be 74 inches high by 99 inches wide, which is pretty solid for such a tight space. And being in such a small space will make the image feel huge. (That's assuming you/I are accounting for the space needed to hang the screen).

      Hi 3on3putt,
Thanks for your input, much appreciated.
I agree and will going with option 2 or 3. I will have a screen about 8 ft wide and min 7 ft from tee. I'll have a 4:3 ratio aspect (8 ft wide x 6 ft high) projection onto screen.
Where do you think the best position for the projector and light would be to avoid shadows and optimise image quality?

Short throw projector. With your ceiling only being 8.5 feet high, you could do a floor mounted projector in front of your hitting mat. You could still do a ceiling mount, but you would just have to position it in a place that won't interfere with your swing. With such low ceilings, you'll have to find one with a vertical offset that is less than 6 inches or so. Projector central will be your friend here. https://www.projectorcentral.com/Opt...ulator-pro.htm
