Buildout help

Hey all,

I am looking at doing a build out in my new houses theater room. I’ll add some pictures on here but wanted some opinions on a few things. As you can see in the pictures, the builder did some nice paneling on the sides of the screen currently there. I would like to keep that visible so I was thinking of maybe doing a big screen that covered just the middle part and left the sides exposed. It would be 9’ high and 10’ wide. I know that using 4:3 I will have spaces on the top and bottom and I am ok with that. I just wanted to know if it was feasible. I was thinking of doing a screen from Carl’s and then putting some sort of padding behind it between the current screen and paneling to protect what’s there and dampen sound. That would leave the impact screen with about 6” of clearance. Is that enough if I put up blankets or something behind it? If you all think that would work I would be looking at doing maybe a custom length archery screen to go on top and making some moveable panels that I can put up to create an enclosure when I have guests over. Any thoughts are welcome. Thanks!

6 inches behind should be fine, especially if you put some foam or a net back there.

As far as leaving the buildouts visible, you'll want something over there like some side walls of an enclosure or some padding on the walls. Shanks will get hit and those buildouts will take a beating. No matter how skilled you are, if you're hitting thousands of balls eventually one is going to hosel rocket on you.

Why not just make the enclosure permanent? Any particular reason you only want to set up the enclosure when guests are over?

More so just to keep the room open. It's only 14x18 so adding a 10x5 enclosure would really close it off. I'm not so much worried about shanks from myself just others when they come over. My thought is that I would likely make a spare panel to just cover the woodwork on the right side if I was ever to shank one. Walls are easy to fix. Not worried about that. Just going for a clean look

Just my 2 cents here .... if it were my space, I would just do a wall to wall screen. If the room is only going to be used as a sim room, then having any open space on the sides won't serve much benefit anyway. The buildouts won't be visible because they would be behind the screen. But as nice as the buildouts are to look at, looking at more image of a golf hole is even better IMO. You could run 4:3 at 13 feet wide and almost 10 feet tall in there and really have an immersive experience. Looks like a good space. Welcome!

I would love to do that but one of the conditions from the boss was that the paneling has to be visible and can still double as a theater room unfortunately
