  • Garage build almost done.

Well its happened. I was sucked in cheap with the rapsodo rmotion. Have since upgraded. I have purchased the mevo+ but am about to try the ES Tour Plus. I know the ES 16 was heavily knocked but I have nothing to lose in a one month trial. I won't see the mevo+ for another month or two at best.

I built my simulator out of 1" schedule 40 PVC with 3/4 EMT around the screen and bottom legs for strength. Since PVC bends a little much. I have used rubber pipe insulation for padding. I had originally made the cage 10'4"x9'4"x10' yesterday i decided to cut 5' off the length and leave the cage 10'4"x9'4"x5' with my hitting mat sitting at the 10' mark. They are 3'x5' mats on each side of my putting green. It is a championship course putting green from birdieball.com. 2'x12' long. Strongly considering making it 10' so my hitting mats are flush. With the rest. The net around my setup is a 10'x30' mesh tarp. Its very spongy and you can see thru it somewhat. The floor is made up of 1" thick gym mat puzzle pieces wrapped with a putting green type of carpet. Finally, the screen is a 10'wx9'h from carls place. My projector is Optoma GT1080HDR.

If anyone is interested here is a list of pieces and price.

1" PVC Pipe from Home Depot originally: $94
It would of been cut in half had I not built it double the size then reduced it.

    1" Rubber insulation: 14x$8.64/6'

    3/4 EMT: 5x$6.20/10'

    10'x12' Green turf: $144

10'x30' HD Mesh Tarp net sunshade: $92.99

1" thick puzzle piece mat: $99.99 for 72 sq ft.
I ended buying another 24 sq ft to fill in two holes. So I have extra mats.

    10'x9' Impact screen: $234.95

    Optoma GT1080HDR: $799

    2'x12' Putting Green (Double Depth 1" thick) : $199
Championship Course. So the speed of the green is the same as the game.

    (2) 3'x5' hitting mats: $159.98

    TGC 2019: $1000

    MEVO+: $1,999
    On back order

    Or

    ES Tour Plus: $2700
I Will post a review of this product since not many have since its been redone from the ES 16

I am waiting for my projector to arrive, and the ES Tour Plus. If anyone has any questions about the ES Tour Plus I am willing to help answer any of those questions. I realize the ES 16 had a lot of issues. I have spoken with Travis quite a bit, I am sure he is annoyed by the amount of questions. However, he has been amazing. He always answers even if its a duplicate question. He doesn't deny the issues with the ES 16. He offered me the 30 day trial, and since I cant get my hands on anything else that is not price gouged on ebay. I dont think i could spend a couple thousand on ebay and feel good about it anyway.

Sadly, I just realized i tried to go cheap, but i completely failed. This is my first time adding this up, and as it sits if i stick with the ES Tour Plus I am well over 5k lol

I started this journey with a rapsodo r motion. 2 months ago, i had asked about upgrading and after a month went by with no response i returned the unit to amazon. I just received an email yesterday about it. Customer service is important, especially with the financial investment. I am looking forward to this journey.

Around $5K is cheap, if you're anywhere close to that number you have done a good job!

Where did you get this: 10'x12' Green turf: $144, do you have a link?

Good choice on the Birdie Ball, I'm considering it as well, though I may try to get by with my 'green turf', if I can get a similar putting speed on it.

    Thanks,
    -Brett

do you stand on the birdie ball? seems liek that would get ruined if it was a stance mat.

No I have two 3x5 hitting mats, and the birdieball green down the middle of everything. My hitting mats are very close in color to the 10' of turf beside the green. If you look close at the bottom left corner you can see where it separates. I will get some more pics up when its actually complete. Though they say you can walk on it, and i have from time to time. It leaves a slide impression then goes away.

I am still debating on how to finish the area with my hitting mats and the putting green. With a side launch monitor i will either have to move the monitor for puts, or place a hitting mat really close to it. Keep in mind the original plan was for the mevo plus that is on back order. So any advice for placing a side mount launch monitor with room for a hitting area and putting green close enough to not have to move each time would be great, but if not its not a big deal. The ES Tour Plus will arrive on wednesday so i will play with some ideas and post the rest of it.

I saw that but those stance mats seem very far to the sides with the putting mat down the center. Where do you hit from? I would want to hit right from the middle of the birdie ball.

Yeah, i do as well. So my problem is how to finish that aspect of my build. I wont see the simulator until Wednesday so i am going to wait to finish until it arrives. Odds are I will end up cutting my putting green and sliding my hitting mats in so i am hitting out of the middle. If i decide to i can always move my launch monitor for putting if it ends up being an issue.

Does anyone know if its a problem for me to buy TGC2019 from the link above to use with the ES Tour Plus? Do I need to go thru Ernest Sports? I know when I had the rmotion i had to upgrade thru them, and same with skytrak it appeared. Thanks in advance.

Just in case anyone else is wondering. I received word back from Protee and you do need to purchase TGC 2019 directly from Ernest Sports. I did that yesterday morning, and I had game downloaded and installed ready to go within about an hour from the moment I paid.

Also, those that are more of a 4:3 setup. I had purchased my screen based on preliminary room i measurements. (I didnt have any sort of launch monitor at the time) So my initial projector left like a 2' or so of white space on top and bottom. I ended up researching, and decided to get a Optoma GT1080HDR and its almost perfect for any resolution. It leaves just a little room on the top and bottom. I believe i have it set to 1280x1024 but i may have made a custom resolution at 1600x1200. Either way, its a nice option for those with more of a square screen.

Well what can i say I had started out with the idea of going cheap, somehow ive just kept fine tuning. I didnt like how blurry my Optoma GT1080HDR was on half of the screen. I did like how it filled my 10' wide by 9' tall. It just was not clear enough for me. OK since the original post I have made some changes:

I had started with a cheap Carl's place screen. It was ok for TGC 2018, and the RMotion. As ive gone down this journey i keep wanting "better" lol So, I have since purchased a Premium screen from Carls place. So with the original $234, i added $599 to the screen. It looks so much better, its unreal how much better it looks. I am using the old cheap screen on the opposite side of my my premium screen. Partially to ease the load on the new screen and to also connect my black mesh tarp to it.

I have also purchased EMT 3 way supports instead of using PVC. So that was another $60

After seeing how much better my screen looked with the Optoma I decided to return that (amazon) because of the blurry half, almost like something is messed up with the lens. I couldnt see with the entry level screen. The Optoma was $799, and the Benq TK850 that should arrive today is $1500 just in case anyone is in the market. It appeared to have the shortest throw for a 4k projector that wasnt ultra short throw. My hitting area is about 13' from the screen so i would almost prefer to hang the projector anywhere from 10'-15' anyway. The Optoma was a short throw, it did what i needed around 5 and a half feet.

Ive also since purchased some particleboard to go under my 1" in foam puzzle mats, and then some adhesive to glue the carpet to the pad. It created a much cleaner look. I ended up purchasing 5 8'x4' pieces. Cant remember the price, around $15 each. I bought 3 cans of industrial strength adhesive, and i believe around $10 a can.

I also (my wife talked me into this part lol) purchased a suround sound setup for my garage. It wasnt to bad coming in around $300 or so.

Unless i am forgetting anything the only other thing i purchased was a 36"x10" country club elite hitting strip. I purchased it without the foam pad they use. Instead i used my adhesive, and my own pad to have it be exactly the height i needed. I then used some 3/8 thick wood to go under it and my hitting mats, along with the particleboard for support. Its very nice, and flush with my birdieball putting green. I also added a 10' x 36" area of home depot synthetic turf/grass as a place to slow the ball down after it comes off the screen. Well home depot couldnt measure so i ended up with 41.5" instead. So i just built around it. For shits and giggles i installed a putting cup at the end of my 12' putting green. It even has a flag lol

Somethings worth mentioning, I had received the ES Tour Plus from Ernest Sports. I had the unit for 3 days before i sent it back. Here is the reason and its not what most think. I had my suround sound, i was listening to music while golfing. The ES Tour Plus is microphone activated, and its critical to have little to no noise while chipping and putting. That was a deal breaker for me. Outside of that the unit worked ok, i would say it made me feel like a better golfer than i am. I believe that is due to the noise from my air conditioner and and surround sound interfering. So if you are thinking about trying the ES Tour Plus, keep in mind noise factors in. They have since sent me the ES 20/20 (motion activated) to see if that fits my needs. It should arrive in a few days.

Here is what my simulator looks like at the moment. Ill let you guys know how the Benq 4k projector, and the ES 2020 works out. Worst case scenario ill just wait for my MEVO + to arrive in the first week of November. Ok i think i have coverted most if not all of the changes. I love how it turned out, and how much better it looks vs when i first started. It was 10'x9'x10' deep, and now my walls only come out 5 feet, its still 10 feet wide by 9 feet tall. The hitting area is 15 feet from the center of my hitting strip to the screen. Still have about 10 feet behind me for the MEVO + (if i go that route)

It just arrived yesterday, i only had time to hit a few balls with it before work. Judging from the 10 balls or so i hit its much better than the ES Tour Plus. The ball recognition zone is much bigger. Its quicker to recognize a ball as well but having only hit a few shots its to early to say.

Great setup! I too started with just a rapsodo r motion. Now a mevo plus is on the way as well as an enclosure from Carl’s. I already have a birdie ball putting green in a nearby space and was wondering if you have noticed whether or not the birdie ball foam is tough enough to handle being in a sim space? Is it getting damaged by the repeated balls dropping on it? Thanks!

I have a similar garage setup sized to fit one stall. Went through a similar process of build & adjust. Have had it about 5 weeks now and 30 rounds. Finally about settled. I also have the TK850. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
