  • Projector and Mount Questions for a 10' Deep Enclosure

I'm in the process of augmenting my 14' wide x 18' deep home theater with a portable SkyTrak based golf simulator. Thanks to @jdwaltz's post on these forums, I was able to get a SkyTrak within 2 days of ordering. I'll be using it with an iPad, with an HDMI connector to the projector. When not in use, I will be folding up the sides and leaning the enclosure against the wall.

I bought a Custom Design Golf "Portable Frame Kit" simulator enclosure. I have all the parts except the elbows which should arrive soon. The enclosure is 10' wide and 9'9" deep, with netting all around the enclosure (including the ceiling). The height of the enclosure at the entrance is 9'9", the height of the enclosure at the impact wall is 7'9". The screen aspect ratio is 4x3.

I've attached images of my room layout. The golf simulator impact screen is perpendicular to my home theater screen. I have the most depth (13'1") that way. It is suggested to setup the enclosure 15" from a wall to allow for the impact screen to absorb the ball. Placing the ball 8' from the screen, yields a drip less than 4' to swing my clubs. I feel that is cutting it close, especially for a driver. I was reading this forum and there were a few posts about putting memory foam behind the screen to absorb the impact. Would that allow me to reduce the distance to wall to about ~6"? Would that be worth the price? If so, does anyone have suggestions on density or thickness of memory foam?

Because of the ceiling net on the portable enclosure, it'd be tough to mount a projector inside the enclosure and still allow me to fold it up when not in use. So a ceiling mount would have to be outside the enclosure, between 10'-12' from the impact screen. This gives me a throw of about 1:1. I'm a little concerned about shadows if it's mounted that far back (2'-4' behind the ball). Alternative options I've thought about are either a DIY removable ceiling mount (see screenshot), or a floor mount. Anyone have suggestions? Lastly, any suggestions for projectors that would fit my needs either for a floor mount or a 1:1 throw? Projector Central is helpful, but there are only a handful of projectors that would fit my needs.

    To summarize my questions:
    - Should I put memory foam behind impact screen to reduce the required spacing to the wall?
    - Is a memory foam solution worth the price?
    - Suggestions for memory foam density and thickness
    - Where to mount the projector (ceiling behind enclosure, ceiling removable mount, floor)
    - Any thoughts on the DIY removable mount
    - Projector suggestions

    Sorry for the long post.

Thanks in advance, these forums are the best.
